Facial scar care

Long story short, I fell down a flight of marble stairs two weeks ago. By some miracle, I did not break anything (thank you, calcium pills), but my face took a hit. I have three large cuts on my forehead, one on my cheek and one at my lip. The doctors at the emergency room sewed me up (30 stitches!), and I saw a plastic surgeon who removed the stitches, told me to use Kelocote (a silicone gel) on the wounds, and basically told me to stay out of the sun and hope for the best. Any advice for me? I am resigned to never looking the same again, but don’t want to have regrets. Thanks in advance.

Ouch! No advice, but sympathies! Just Ouch!

My oldest had a horrible scar on her thigh from a rock climbing accident. I mean, it was keloid (and she doesn’t normally keloid) and raised and really bad.

After several laser treatments (expensive), it faded to nothing. I don’t know if that is an option for the face, and she had this done in a doc’s office, not a cosmetic laser situation…so, maybe? Good luck, though. It sounds like it was quite a painful fall. I’m glad you are okay.

My daughter cut above her eye in a ski accident, 13 stitches. She put SPF 55 stick on it every day & used Mederma on it religiously. It smells a little, but it works. She also used Vitamin E oil on it. It’s barely noticeable 3 years later!
Good luck to you & hope you’re alright otherwise - sounds like something I would do…

I am so sorry! Thank God you didn’t break a bone, or sustain a head injury.

I know people who have had great results using various scar reducing products. The plastic surgeon’s recommendation is probably the best, but you might try a dermatologist or another plastic surgeon for a second opinion.

Once when I fell and hurt my knee badly (skin only, raw open wound), the doctor told me to keep it constantly moist with ointments to prevent scarring, not to let it scab over. I did not get a scar.

I imagine that much will depend on your skin. I’m glad to hear that there a laser treatments that might take care of anything that does form.

Best of luck - and keep us posted!

That sounds so painful!

when my D was in the hospital ( as a preemie) they put silver colloidal cream on her skin- ( they had to take blood gas every hour-by hand because she could not tolerate an umbilical catheter- )
seemed to work pretty well.

also vitamin C assists in healing- plus you could use neosporin or similar cause any infection will interfere with healing.

I’ve also been told bymy dermatologist that you want to keep a wound moist to prevent scarring.

I’ve had great luck with Mederma and ScarGuard. I have a keloid start to form after I had a mole removed. That has never happened to me before. I used ScarGuard on the advise of my physician and it really made a difference.

And sunscreen is a must.
