Facilities

I have not been able to tour the University of Chicago but I have read that the only major weakness of the school maybe the facilities, especially the quality of the theatre space and the student union.

Are the facilities of the school of high quality?

Apparently they’re very good.

Overall, the school is incredibly well-maintained. The buildings are old, but there’s constant renovation and construction going on. (My dorm’s in the process of getting a new roof and kitchens installed; the Chicago Theological Seminary is covered with scaffolding; the main library is about to begin an expansion to include more bookstacks.)

The student union, Reynolds Club, is like eating and studying in someone’s mansion. Inside Reynolds Club is Mandel Hall, a huge event space, where a lot of concerts/ student-run cultural shows are put on, and there’s University Theater’s HQ, and a third floor theater. By my estimation, these event spaces are nice. I don’t know how they compare to other schools, especially those with large theater programs.

Reynolds Club has study lounges, the C-Shop coffee shop, and Hutch Commons, which probably appears in every Chicago brochure because it’s too damn pretty. There are offices for student clubs in the basement, and you’ll always see some sort of club selling t-shirts and fundraising. (The “Where Fun Comes to Die” shirt, for example, is sold at the Reynold’s Club, next to the frisbee team selling brownies and the rugby team selling backrubs).

I think it’s a really great place, though I don’t know how it compares to other student unions. I think some other schools might have TV lounges or chocolate fountains-- we don’t have those.

It depends on what you think makes a good student union, too. Chicago’s has a different style and feel than many, and it’s design is not at all modern, which is what I’ve seen at many colleges. The theater facilities obviously aren’t as good as large schools with major theater programs. I’ve heard from my friends in theater that they’re fine for what they’re used for, though.
