FAFSA Corrections

Could someone fill me in on correcting data input errors once the FAFSA form’s been processed? I inadvertently listed 529 funds as cash instead of investments, etc. Thanks in advance!

Usually with the FAFSA you can go back and make edits once its been processed by the FSA. Im unsure of how that’s working this year - last year’s FAFSA took awhile to make edits to, considering the dumpster fire that was the 24-25 FAFSA.

Often a button will show up on the dashboard that will read “Make edits,” or some related wordage, and from there you can make edits. After you confirm edits, the FAFSA will be reprocessed/changed to reflect your edits.

I did the exact same thing! I went in and corrected it and resubmitted. No problem at all it’s already been processed.

Once the FAFSA completes processing (a couple days), you can go back and edit. Be sure to resubmit once the corrections are complete. In this case, the SAI will not change, since cash & investments are treated equally in the SAI formula.

I guess I was concerned after reading this section on correcting your FAFSA form:

Updating Information

Most of the information on your FAFSA form can’t be updated because it must be accurate as of the day you originally signed and submitted your form. For example, if you spent some of your savings after filing the FAFSA form, you can’t update your information to show a change in that amount.

You should speak to the financial aid office at the college or career/trade school you plan to attend if there will be a significant change in your or your parent’s income for the present year or if your family has other circumstances that cannot be reported on the FAFSA form. Additionally, if your personal circumstances change and impact your [dependency status] after you submit your FAFSA form, contact your school’s financial aid office to ask if they have a policy that allows you to update your answers to the personal circumstance questions. The financial aid staff will tell you what to do.

As long as you aren’t changing any numbers, it’s fine. You’re just correcting where you put the numbers. Not a problem!
