FAFSA/CSS Extension

Do colleges offer extensions for financial aid document submission? My house literally burned to the ground last weekend and all of our tax forms with it. How can I apply for an extension?

First of all, I am sorry to hear of the fire. That is such a devastating event. Hope no one was hurt.

The FAFSA and CSS Profile are on-line, so this will not be an issue. Many schools deadlines for FAFSA and CSS have already passed with a few having March 15th deadline. With regard to the IDOC or tax forms to send in to the schools, you must communicate with them. And, I know it sounds awful, but have some documentation that your house actually did burn down.

I agree, you should contact the financial aid departments ASAP. This is truly an extenuating circumstance. They may ask that you estimate your Profile and Fafsa forms using the best guesses you have. At least then, they will be on file. Then you can correct them once you have your documents at hand. BUT I would call them…explain the situation. This is one time I would really telephone and ask for a supervisor or someone in charge. Often the folks answering the phones are not able to make decisions. Good luck to you…and I am sorry to hear about your home. I too home that no one was hurt, and that you have a safe place to stay until your home can be rebuilt.
