Fafsa dad behind on taxes

My dad is behind on taxes and filed for a extension 2012 , is there a way to still get my pell grant.

No, because w/o the income/tax information, the feds won’t know if you qualify for that Pell Grant.

You will get your Pell grant as long as you’re eligible and you file your FAFSA befire the federal deadlines. The federal deadline for 2013-2014 FAFSA is 6/30/14 & corrections by 9/24/14.
I would suggest the you could file your FAFSA now with estimated parents’ tax information, and make corrections when your dad file his returns. This way you will know if you’re eligible for Pell grant.

^^^

Yes, the above is true as long as the dad files.

I was thinking that the student was asking if he can get his Pell Grant when classes start even tho his dad won’t have filed by that point.

Yes, the dad needs to file soon so the student can get his Pell by the time classes start.

Actually, while the student may be eligible for a Pell grant as indicated by the FAFSA, no actual money will be disbursed or credited to his account until he completes the IRS data retrieval /verification process required by the school.

IF he cannot use the data retrieval tool, then he must get a copy of dad’s tax transcript from the IRS.

The challenge is that if dad owes taxes, he may not be able to use the IRS data retrieval tool. If dad has not filed taxes yet, he will not be able to use the data retrieval tool or get a transcript.

I used the irs data retrieval tool already for myself , my dad will be so behind ill never get money in time. I logged on his taxact and entered the right information from his W-2s. It’s all crap We obviously cant afford to pay for school and government wont help me out.

Revix2k9, it is not “all crap”. There are rules to getting money, any money. And the rules for PELL and other financial aid is that the returns have to be filed. Them’s the rules. My advice is to have if file a return on an estimated basis, and then you can get your aid. He then will have to file a 1040X to amend that return. In doing this, you are taking the risk and trouble of differences between the two returns that the school and the government DO NOT want to take and won’t take. If you get more money than you are entitled to get,and if your dad gets any refunds that he should not be getting, once the real info is available and the amended returns are filed, you and your dad have to return the excess. This is what the school does not want to get involved in doing. You can shift that pain in the neck onto yourself and dad.

Also if the amended return results in you being eligible for more aid, you can file for that too. This is what ti takes to get the money, and see nothing unfair about it.

So my dad has to file a 1040x? what is step by step that i have too.

 1. Your dad file 1040 as best he could.
 2. Correct your FAFSA (I assume you filed FAFSA already.)
 3. FAFSA will determine if you’re eligible for Pell grant or not.
 4. If you do, school will get Pell grant after you’ve attended the classes in the Fall.
 5. Your dad filed 1040x when he ready.
 6. You report to school that your dad filed 1040x.
 7. Your school will determine if you’re eligible for more Pell grant or less.
 8. If you eligible for more, you’ll get a refund.
 9. If you eligible for less (or become ineligible), you’ll need to pay back to school within a small window.

Most people will have problems with step 9)

so my dad has to file his 1040 even though he cant pay his taxes?

Yes, your dad should file his tax returns ASAP even though he couldn’t pay his taxes. Afterward, your dad should worked with IRS/state taxation on the payment plans.

Otherwise, his tax dues will just growth & growth. Filed an extension doesn’t mean you get an extension on paying your taxes.

Revix2k9, I want to see if I understand what you are saying. Your Dad can’t / won’t pay his fair share of taxes but you want a government (other taxpayer) handout to attend college? So everyone else is supposed to pay for you?

I’m sorry you got caught up in this but as a law abiding taxpayer that attitude is “crap”!

i pay my taxes man , I cant afford to go to college my dad doesnt make enough money. Dont get all judgemental on me man.

I truly admire those of you who are willing to provide help to this individual. I cannot stomach his attitude.

To the OP…filing another person’s taxes as though you are them is a federal offense. Enough said.

I think your issue is with your dad, who messed up big time, not with the government or the people here trying to help you. Let all that vitriol out on him and come back when you can converse politely.

Op is doing that??

I think this is where Thumper got that from:

Also, post #8 is difficult to interpret because of the poor English, but the phrase, “what is step by step that i have too” could mean that the OP was planning to do the filing. Or it could mean that the OP was planning to get together with dad to do it. The warning seems legitimate.

OP does not get the contradiction between the father not filing and paying taxes and on the other hand putting their hand out and shouting “gimmie”.

Done with this thread.
