FAFSA Death of Primary Parent

So last year when I first filed fafsa I used my primary parents information and got a lot of financial aid since she didn’t have a lot of income. Then Feb of last year she passed away and now I have to submit a fafsa renewal for 2018-2019. I now live with my other parent but he makes significantly more money and I’m scared that I’m going to lose my financial aid, but even though he makes more money he’s not going to pay for my college so I don’t know what I’m going to do. Does fafsa do anything for students that recently lost a parent or am I screwed? btw I go to a UC but I don’t know if that helps… thanks.

I’m so sorry to hear about the loss of your mom.

When you filled out fafsa with your dad’s info, what is your EFC now…or if not submitted yet, what is his household income, including any new spouse’s income, and your family size?

FASFA is just an app. It doesnt “do” anything. Most of UC aid is Cal Grant and fed Pell Grant based. If you no longer qualify, then you’ll lose some or all of your aid. I hope that your dad’s family’s income is low enough to get aid.

You must fill out the FAFSA answering the questions as they apply to you now, which means with your living parent. You can then ask the school for professional judgment for help with FA.

Yes you can ask for professional judgment, but there really aren’t any grounds. Simply saying that the new primary parent’s income is too high and won’t pay will not sway a FA officer. Many kids have parents who won’t pay.

I just hope that the dad’s household income is still below Cal grant requirements.
