My son’s mother is estranged from him and has been for over 4 years. She does not contribute anything to his education, room, board, etc. She works but hasn’t filed taxes in over 9 years. I claim my son as a dependent and have for over 10 years. Do I have to list her income when it really has no bearing on my son’s true financial picture ? Thanks
When a student’s parents are divorced, only the custodial parent’s information is used on the FAFSA. If that custodial parent is remarried, then the spouse’s income also needs to be reported.
If your son also applies to schools that use the CSS Profile to collect financial information, many of them require noncustodial parent information.
Thank you. Any idea which schools require the CSS profile ? He applied to only U. of California schools.
Does your son live with you? If so, you are His custodial parent. Only your information would be on the FAFSA.
If you son applies to any schools that require the non-custodial parent information, you will want to apply for a waiver for this…that would usually be schools using the CSS Profile.
@tjosocal, here is the link that lists the schools: https://profile.collegeboard.org/profile/ppi/participatingInstitutions.aspx
