FAFSA Error Question

We filled out and submitted the FAFSA in February and received a confirmaiton email on February 16th so I assumed we were all set and done.
Congratulations, XXXXX!

Your 2011-2012 FAFSA was successfully submitted to Federal Student Aid.

Then I received a letter on March 13th, from one of the schools my son applied to, saying that the FAFSA was rejected!! I went back to the FAFSA website and resubmitted and got another confirmation email on March 16th. The confirmation started like this:
Congratulations, XXXXX!

Your 2011-2012 FAFSA was successfully submitted to Federal Student Aid.

Both emails have the same confirmation number and Data Release Number.

My question is this…several state scholarships, school deadlines, etc. say that March 1 is the FAFSA submission deadline. Since we had a Feb. confirmation email, will we be considered as meeting that date?

It sounds as if the school may have made an update that resulted in the FAFSA being rejected. The most likely one this year is a result of the darn FAFSA skip logic regarding assets. It was supposed to make things easier, but it is making things harder, instead. If you were asked if your assets exceeded a certain number and the answer was no, you didn’t have to put any numbers in for assets. Unfortunately for many schools, that creates an issue on their end when they make any changes … including something as simple as updating a budget period. It can cause the EFC to be estimated in their system … while it is actually fine outside their own computer system. Look on the school’s website … in the search bar, enter Banner. If you come up with matches that indicate that the school uses the Banner computer software system, this may well be the problem.

If this is the case, the FAFSA would be fine at the state program level. It should also have a receipt date at the school of the submission date, since it sounds like it was a “good EFC” when it was processed by CPS (the central processor). You should contact the school to find out how they want you to fix it, though. We are requesting our families complete an asset value worksheet, and we input the numbers on our end. Other schools may have come up with their own fix. In any case, contacting the school on Monday is a wise move.

Thank you Kelsmom. That probably explains why I did not get any notifications from any other schools he was accepted at.
