FAFSA FOR TWINS

D1/D2 will start school in the Fall. I filed FAFSA for both: D1 will be going to a state school and commuting therefore we will not use/take the Federal Aid offered. D2 will be going to a private school and will be taking the Federal aid offered. Thinking ahead for the next school year. Do I need to file FAFSA for D1 if we dont intend to take Fed’l loans for her? If we Dont, will this have an impact on D2’s application. There is a question on how many kids will be in College, Is FAFSA their way of tracking both being in College?

You don’t have to file for D1 unless you want the option of taking a loan. And you can file any time during the year.

FAFSA isn’t needed to track the other twin, but perhaps it’s an easy way for schools. However, with the auto-populate feature, it would be super easy to file for the other twin after doing the first twin.

Does D2 qualify for subsidized loans and might D1 eventually go to grad school?

@Madison85 D2 recieved Perkins loan+Sub and Unsub loan + Univ grant. D1 highly unlikely will pursue Grad school (she will be pursuing Fashion Design and wants to get into the industry through interniships asap). I’m not sure what you are getting at. I would appreciate if you can bring up future scenarios which I may not be thinking of right now

If D1 would need grad school money in future years and would qualify now for unneeded subsidized loans if she filed FAFSA, she could take the subsidized loans and save them for grad school.

That would be a good idea for someone heading for grad school.

However, for the OP’s DD who will be fashion design, avoiding all loans is a good idea since that career is often very low paying as a newish grad.
