FAFSA: How much did you earn from working in 2013?

Full question states: How much did you earn from working (wages, salaries, tips, etc.) in 2013? This amount is found on IRS Form 1040A-line 7 or 1040EZ-line 1.

I filed my tax return using TurboTax, and for my total gross income, it’s (just using estimates here) $8,000. Of that amount, $3,000 came from working and $5,000 came from the taxable amount of the scholarships I received. I filed a 1040A form, so on the FAFSA website, it says that the information about how much I earned can be found on line 7 - on line 7, it says
SCH 5000 (which is the taxable portion of the scholarships) and right beside it, it says $8,000 where you add everything up.

Does the taxable part of scholarships count as working wages (salaries, tips, wages, etc.), so I would write $8,000, or do I just put the $3,000 I got from ACTUALLY working? I’m a bit confused, because I didn’t get that scholarship money from working. I know there’s a question about taxable portion of scholarships/grants too, so I’m not sure what I put where. This is my first time doing this, so any help is appreciated.

You will use the $3000 for “income earned from work.” I know it’s confusing, but the $3000 is correct (I work in financial aid). Don’t forget to put the $5000 in 44d (this keeps it from being counted against you in the EFC formula).

No, the amount from scholarships does not count as working wages. Only the part that is actually from working. The question is used to calculate allowances for payroll taxes (FICA) which is only on income from working.

Thank you! That makes a lot more sense.

Okay, so I just spoke to a FAFSA customer service representative to be sure, and she pretty much said what kelsmom and swimcatsmom said.
