Quick Question, When filing the fafsa, when it ask how many of my siblings are in college, do i tell them how many are currently in college, or how many will be in college while I am in college? Because one of them intends to graduate as soon as I begin with summer school.
You count the ones who will be in college for the academic year for the FAFSA you are completing. So when you do the 2017-2018 FAFSA…you include siblings who will be in college that academic year.
If your brother is graduating in June 2017…no, he would not be included in the count of those IN college on your FAFSA.
You input the number of dependents your parents will have (excluding the parents themselves) attending college during the 2017-2018 academic year (assuming you are doing the 2017/18 FAFSA).
Ok, thank you ! I was wondering becuase we have know way of knowing if he will finish during the summer or not.
Well…the 2017-2018 FAFSA will be available for completion in October 2016.
If your brother’s graduation date is June 2017, that will be LONG after your financial aid applications will need to be submitted.
When will your brother KNOW when he will graduate?
If you include him…and he is no longer in college…your aid WILL get reduced. Because your brothers college will need to complete a form verifying that he is a student when you are.
If you don’t include him…but he in college…that could make a difference too.
When will he know for sure whether he is graduating???
If he’s not sure by when it’s time to apply, you select the most likely probability. Then you go back and amend with the final results.
