Fafsa question

So my husband is a small business owner and just getting ready to file 2010 taxes. When my daughter goes to apply for fafsa, what should she do about the taxes? Would it be better if I file separately? I don’ t know if he’ll have his business papers ready before the deadline. What should we do?

2010 taxes? Hopefully a typo as your daughter will not get any aid until 2012 taxes are filed.

It makes no difference if you file separately. Both your taxes will have to be filed before aid will be disbursed. You can complete FAFSA with “will file” for the tax status and estimated numbers. This may get you an estimated financial aid package, but taxes will have to be finalized before the FA package will be finalized and before aid is disbursed. Estimate as accurately as you can to get the most accurate FA estimate.
