My daughter will start her last year of college Autumn 2014…we have filled out the FAFSA every year for her and are filling one out now for next year. She has taken the maximum student loans allowed and then scholarships and our out of pocket pay the rest. My son will graduate high school this Spring. He has no desire at this time to go to a 4 year college nor does he have the grades that are needed. He is open to going to a community college but is not totally sure if he will even do that. We would just pay what the tuition would be out of pocket. It will be less than what we pay for our daughter. He will not need any loans. Is there any reason that we should fill out a FAFSA for him?

There might (and it’s a long shot) be grants he would be eligible for. Some schools give a bonus if you fill FAFSA out early. Just check with the school.

What schools give a “bonus” for filing your FAFSA early?

You filled out a FAFSA already (for your daughter). Your son’s FAFSA will be very similar to hers.

I’ve never heard of a school giving a bonus for filing FAFSA early.

Filing early gets you in line for aid that is limited, such as SEOG and Perkins (for high need students). But I’ve never heard of a bonus.

My son was admitted to a LAC that offered him an additional $1000 award for filing FAFSA.
