FAFSA Renwal?

I’m having a senior moment! When my DD who is going to be a Senior in College next year goes to do her FAFSA is she doing a FAFSA Renewal? Or starting a new Fafsa?

Ugh why can’t I remember?? I have a high school senior and we just did his New Fafsa but now I don’t know which to tell my DD to do? Help!!

It’s probably the renewal now that I stop and think about it, but please confirm. Thanks!

Don’t mind me! I was just in shock at how much our EFC went up. But my DH did get a promotion so there is a reason for it. But Yikes! Oh well it was fun while it lasted. Just gave me a brain freeze seeing youngest kids EFC.

It’s a “renewal fafsa” for existing college students!

:slight_smile:

It’s a renewal if she did a FAFSA before. She is the one who should start it by signing in with her FSA ID.

She might have to create a new password.

The asset protection allowance also went down alot! Like it was $20k last year and $13k this year.

@mommdc I thought somewhere I looked at a chart and our asset protection allowance was 30k. Maybe I’m wrong and didn’t know what I was looking at. Doesn’t it go by oldest parents age (in our case DH 54) number in household (5) for us…it was in some thread somewhere.

But if it’s 13k well no wonder 8-}

@SeeksKnowledge I’m glad you wrote this. My daughter is in her first year of college so this will be the first time we’re renewing and I wasn’t really sure about it.

Can you I ask you this: We also have a senior in high school so we need to create his first FAFSA.

Am I able to use my same account information for both my kids or am I going to have to create a separate one for each? I’m hoping I just have one user name and password for both. Thanks!

We’re in process of doing my daughter’s right now and will start my son’s when he gets his verification processed.

I thought I might have looked at the wrong table of the PDF, it’s possible.

The income protection allowance goes by members in household and students in college, the asset protection allowance by older parent’s age

@Mojo1995 no, each student will need their own FSA ID and one parent needs one too.

But once your older child renews her FAFSA, there should be a link to start a sibling’s FAFSA.

Then some of the parent info should be prefilled.

@mommdc , thanks!

OMG! I spent three hours last night trying to renew S17’s FAFSA. I kept getting a message that my username was already in use. Well, DUH, it is - by ME. When it accepted the username, it rejected the password I finally gave up and printed out a form that I filled out by hand. I have POA for S17 so I am signing the form and mailing it in. I don’t why I do this every year but I might get Excelsior for next year so I have to do this.

It’s important to realize that the FAFSA is the student’s application. So the student should sign in with their FSA ID and then you can go from there.

Parent FSA ID is only used to sign the FAFSA.
