FAFSA Selective Service Question

Hi so I recently filed my FAFSA and got it processed already so I checked the SAR report. It said:

WHAT YOU MUST DO NOW (Use the checklist below to make sure that all of your issues are resolved.)
If you want to register with Selective Service, you can register by doing one of the following: (1) answer “Male” to Item 21 and “Register Me” to Item 22 by clicking ‘Make FAFSA Corrections’ on the ‘My FAFSA’ page,

However, to the FAFSA question “Are you registered with the Selective Service System?”, I said yes purely because I heard you don’t get any financial aid or grants or anything if you say no. I’m 17 years old and I don’t turn 18 until next September 2018. Am I supposed to correct it to say “No” and answer “Register Me” to item 22? For reference, the first question asks “Are you registered with the Selective Service System?” and the second question says “Most male citizens and male immigrants must register with the Selective Service System to receive federal student aid. If you are not registered, select Register me.”

So basically, do I correct my fafsa to say NO to the first question and say Register Me for the second question? or do I leave it as is

Have you registered for the selective service? My son did this when he applied for a driver’s license. Maybe your state does it this way as well.

@oldUVAgrad As far as I know, no I didn’t. I think I should probably correct it to say No and select Register Me

Don’t intentionally misrepresent on the financial aid forms. It’s a really bad idea.

I don’t think you can register until you are within 3 months of your 18th birthday. If you check ‘register me’, I think you will get a notice that you can’t be registered until XXX, but that’s the option I’d pick (register me).

BUT, don’t count on them to do it. Follow up, make sure you do get registered around your 18th birthday.

Do not answer yes if you are not registered.

Ok, I fixed it. Thanks!
