Whew, I feel relief altho I need to circle back with 2012 final numbers. Will colleges be happy now ?
Just wondering, we have income property which I have been told knocks us out of the box for any need based money, that is fine. So am I submitting FAFSA just for work study someday down the road? I know I have to file even tho my kids will not qualify for financial aid per se.

You can calculate your EFC using the calculators here, or go to the workshets online. If your EFC is greater than the cost of your college, you wont get any aid including work study.

The FAFSA isnt required unless you are pursing aid. If you arent sure where you stand (and you sound a bit usure) its a good idea to submit one anyway. Doesnt hurt.

Yes, ldavis, that is the reason to apply. If you don’t, your student will not be considered for work study or student loans at all. Even with income property (we also have it) if your student’s tuition exceeds your EFC, you may see something from the school by way of a grant. Just depends on the numbers and every student’s situation is different.

Last year was our first time with two in college, so essentially the EFC was split, and though still laughingly higher than any brush with reality, my son received some grants directly from his private college and $3000 of work study. We didn’t expect this at all and it made us very happy!

We shall see what this year brings…

Thanks for your replies, really helpful :)
