This year, I put my dad on my fafsa application, but things have changed and now, I would put my mom. My moms income is significantly different than my dads though, will this cause issues? Am I allowed to change the parent in next years fafsa application?
You must list the parent, whom you lived with the most in the previous calendar year. If you are spending the most time with your mother, then on Jan 1, you will use your mother’s income.
Use the parent you lived with most during the 365 days before the day you submit your FAFSA.
It’s now November. Can you spend enough time with your mom to support that change?
It’s November, but you don’t have to file in Jan. She could wait until late February or March if those extra days would help get it to the point of spending more time with the mother.
But that selection (dad vs mom) is still based on time spent with each in 2015.
It’s not 2015, it’s the 12 months prior to the day the student submits the FAFSA. If the student submits it on April 1, then it is for the 12 month period from 4/1/2015-3/31/2016.
No…it’s the 365 days prior to the FAFSA filing date…not the 2015 calendar year.
