Fafsa

if i have a sister who is attending college overseas, should i add that in my fafsa question regarding number of people in college? I didnt add myself as I am still in high school. But finaid says that minimum should be 1. what do i dio?

The minimum is 1, because you’re applying for next year (when you will be in college). So yes, you count yourself.

I’m not sure about the overseas college, though; check the FAFSA instructions or call them.

When it asks you for the number in college, you are to include yourself and any other siblings or dependents (not parents) that attend college. You are filling out the FAFSA for the coming school year – so that is why you include yourself.

You would only include your sister if she attends a Title IV school that leads to a degree.

"Is there an overseas equivalent to Title IV schools?

No. Since the Title IV is United States Federal Code there is not an overseas equivalent. However, there are many foreign schools that are eligible to receive Title IV funds such as Stafford Loan and Pell grants. Search for a complete list at <a href=“Federal Student Aid”>Federal Student Aid. Search for the school under “foreign country”. The following page will have a long list of schools that qualify."

"The rules for including someone in number in college are as follows:

The student is always included.

Other members of the household, except the parents, may be included if they are or will be enrolled at least half time in a program that leads to a college degree, certificate, or recognized education credential at a Title IV institution and for whom the family may reasonably be expected to contribute to their postsecondary education. (West Point and other service academies do not count as Title IV institutions, so siblings who are attending a service academy are not included in the number in college.)

The parents are included at the discretion of the financial aid administrator if they are or will be enrolled at least half time in a program that leads to a college degree, certificate, or recognized education credential at a Title IV institution.

These definitions are based on Sections 474(b)(3), 475(f), 480(k) and 480(l) of the Higher Education Act. "

thank you guys. Cleared out now.
