Do those who attend Service Academies need to file Fafsa? My understanding is that kids can receive scholarship monies toward books and incidentals, just not toward tuition. So is it worth it or in any way required to file?

Not required for the Academies. I never sent the Fafsa to them. Now for civilian schools and scholarships, If your are applying for Aid or even Merit type scholarships the Fafsa will be required.

If you son/daughter has a civilian school for a back up then go ahead an apply. There are deadlines beyond which you can’t get aid.
Say your son breaks his leg in early June or gets mono the week before he is to report - hopefully he has a back up school.
If you don’t have a back up school then go ahead and file and list your local community college or another local college - often times the smaller local colleges will have room for late applicants in the summer. It is easy enough to go in and add another school later but the filing should be done soon.
Better to be safe than sorry.
But yeah you can’t file for a Service Academy.
