HI! I am an poc, low class AP and honors student and am currently in my junior in high school & was wondering if i still have any chance into getting into a decent college! Last semester and a little of sophomore year I was at the lowest point of my life with my mental health and overall life. This, then, greatly effected my academic performance and brought my “eh” grades even lower. Currently, my mental health has been exceptionally improved yet i still fear that my past poor performance will exclude me even from the most unselective of colleges. I plan on retaking my failed classes and getting straight A’s the rest of my high school career whilst receiving an estimated 1350 on the SAT( might seem out of reach but i got a 1150 on my psat last yr without studying!). I know I am a competitive and hard working type A student, I just let my internal unresolved problems get the best of my grades. Once again, i am improved and ready to make up for it. Im truly just wondering if i have a chance at any kind of UC’S ( or any) that are decent.

You probably don’t have a chance at the UCs, they’re known for rescinding admission for Ds and Fs (not sure if this translates to junior year grades). A 1350 isn’t competitive at most of the UCs anyway.
The UCs would be very reachy for your stats. It isn’t only the failed classes, but your smattering of Cs will drag you down. However, there are many fantastic colleges out there that will be happy to take you, and may give you a give you a hook for being a URM (the UCs won’t). If you name some criteria you’re looking for in a college and give a budget, there are many posters on here who could suggest some places for you to research.
@gumbymom is an expert on UC schools. She may be able to tell you if retakes on those classes you failed can salvage your apps or not.
Quite blunt but couldn’t be any more true @izrk02
@lexialexia Don’t worry too much! If your internal issues have conflicted with your grades, I think that worrying about college wouldn’t be a great solution for those internal conflicts.
You are amazing at what you do and amazing for who you are
All UC’s are “decent”. Below are the average capped weighted UC GPA’s for 2019 admits and the UC’s tend to be very GPA focused.
UCB: 4.23
UCLA: 4.25
UCSD: 4.23
UCSB: 4.16
UCI: 4.13
UCD: 4.13
UCSC: 3.96
UCR: 3.90
UCM: 3.73
Regarding the UC’s, you would have to retake the classes by end of Summer prior to Senior year to replace the D and F grades on your transcript. You are required to report both the original grades and the repeat grades on your UC application, but if you have the repeat grades completed at time of application, then these grades would be used in the UC GPA calculation.
If not, then the D and F grades will factored into your UC GPA calculation and not having 3 years of English with a C or higher grade at time of application would make you ineligible to apply for the UC’s.
UC’s use only 10-11th grades in their GPA calculation, so the 4 C’s Sophomore year alone will impact your chances.
Based on your current grades, your UC GPA’s are as follows:
Unweighted: 2.92
Capped weighted: 3.08
Fully weighted: 3.08
If you repeat the 3 classes with A’s, you GPA would be:
Unweighted: 3.38
Capped weighted: 3.63
Fully weighted: 3.63
Your target UC’s would be UC Merced, UC Riverside and UC Santa Cruz. A capped weighted UC GPA below 4.0 makes the rest of the UC’s probably out of Reach since below a 4.0 Capped weighted UC GPA is below the 25th percentile.
I encourage you to continue to do well in all your classes but consider some alternatives to the UC’s such as Cal states, private universities and possible UC transfer via TAG.
