Failed a class=automatic rejection?

Due to complex circumstances that I will not address here, I got a D in BC Calculus this first semester of my Senior year, does that mean Northwestern will reject me automatically?

No, but I’m guessing it sure as hell won’t help. Maybe you should explain it in your app.

If your verbal and writing scores on your SAT I are very strong, and it’s clear that math just isn’t your thing, they might overlook it. Don’t let it discourage you from applying, definitely. If there’s a non-academic reason for the D, I would definitely explain it in an essay or letter.

Depends what you want to major in. I’d imagine McCormick would view a D in calculus differently than Medill. :)

No matter what your strenghts and weaknesses are, a D is usually unacceptable, especially for top schools like Northwestern. Unless the rest of your transcript and application is flawless, I would not have too much hope in April. I would make sure to write a letter explaining your circumstances.

Ya that’s what I think too.

I’m not academically strong either, so Northwestern is a reach for me. Though I don’t have much hope in it, I would just apply to it for the sake of having tried.

Thanks tho.

Contrary to what taryn said, all NU schools will view a D in Calc BC as a clear indication of lack of good study habits, unwillingness to learn, etc. I am really angry that people think Medill doesn’t care about math or science scores/grades. Maybe that’s just because I am in Medill and want to double major in chemistry, but the bottom line is this: Calc BC is a high level calculus course, which would indicate that you have had experience with the subject and are probably very good at math, and the fact that you are getting a D might precipitate a note of explanation in your app. Your D is not a definite rejection, but it surely doesn’t help your chances. Good luck with whatever you decide to do!
