Failed an AP? Does it hurt college chances?

I promised my friend that I’d post this. He has a much better academic standing than me, but he has one big problem: he failed an AP exam and did so so in the class. In the first semester he got a C+, then he got a A on the second semester, but he got a 1. His unweighted is 3.8 (much better than my 3.66) and weighted is 5.1 , but he feels that colleges will not admit him based on that. His other grades, though, are fabulous. He got 2090 on SAT (640 CR, 790 M, 660 W) and 34 on ACT. He got a 780 on SAT II Math and 760 in Chem. He doesn’t have that many EC’s, but he has 2 leadership. He’s also Hispanic. Since he wants to be an engineer, he feels that his chance to apply to better schools is over. He wanted to apply to Caregiver Mellon, Georgia Tech, Texas A&M and U of Michigan.

Anyone? This is for a friend.

I think the best thing to do is NOT send the AP score to the colleges. If they don’t have them they won’t know he got a 1. They can only consider what he sends and a 1 in my opinion would hurt his application. I think that with the 34 ACT and the SAT II scores he has a good chance to get into Georgia Tech. I don’t know anything about the other schools.

Thanks! I’ll tell him. He was just mainly worried about the C+, though. It lowered his GPA, not considerably but still. He just doesn’t like the appearance of the C+.
