failed general chemistry 1 exam with 56%

failed general chemistry 1 first exam with 56% as a sophomore in college. Should I drop it or keep moving on and change my study habit? I only have to take general chemistry one and don’t need general chemistry two and I did pretty well in physic and math but I didn’t why I scored so low on the first general chemistry exam. I thought I would get like a 70% and I just need a c- to pass. I studied for 7 hours and went over all the notes. Maybe I need to do some practice exams they offered. Tomorrow is the last day to drop the class. Should I take it over the summer at a community college?

Yes, good idea – never ignore study materials that are offered to you.

How many more tests will there be? Do you think you have enough of an understanding of the material to pass the class if you study more and/or get help from the professor? How difficult are your other classes and do they take up a lot of time?

I made a 47% or something like that on the first test in a class that I needed for my major. That was a wake up call for me to prepare better, not wait until the night before to study, and study more for the future tests. I couldn’t drop it, or I’d fall behind (I couldn’t take the class at a CC - it was too specialized). The next test, I got the 2nd highest grade.

That being said, I did drop a computer science course and took it at the small college in my hometown the next summer. It WAS much easier there.

Either option is probably OK for you - it just depends on whether you want to work hard (and have the time for that) and get it over with, or spend part of your summer break taking a chem class.

If you can reasonably expect to earn a C- or better stay in.

Definitely change how you are studying. a 56% is a wake up call.
Definitely do practice tests to see if you know all of the areas they are testing.
Like @Mandalorian said, if you can get a C then stay in.

Are you sure the 56% is your grade? I had a similar experience but then found out there was a curve and I had a solid C (could still do better!). Talk to your prof or TA for extra help.

Are you going to apply for any kind of grad school? Do you have more classes that will build on chemistry?
I would think seriously about dropping it if that is the case.
Is there anyone you can study with? Did you do quizlet? Office hours? Tutoring center?

I am not planning to go to grad school. I believe this is the only chemistry class I needed to take and I might need it for mechanics of material.
