ok so i failed this history class twice already and i dont even need it to transfer. I am doing great in all my pre req classes though and i failed an another history class which i retook and got an A and an anthropology class which i retook and got a B. and I have two C’s in philosophy and english, BUT I have an A in all my biology’s, chemistry’s, and my first 2 calculus classes along with my physics…do you think its impossible for me to get into UCLA? help is much appreciated :)

not gonna ask why you failed twice…but its still possible depending on your overall GPA, your extra curricular, and anything else that will help them see pass a double fail.

if you dont need it to transfer, they generally will put a heavier weight on transferable GPA/credits only.

and if you dont need it…why are you taking it…?

You can still get into a decent school, if you don’t get in UCLA, your GPA would be around 3.3 with those grades, still a very good solid GPA you got their.

There’s a chance still, but if not you can still make it to a CSU.

Your post was a little confusing but it sounds like you failed one History class twice, another History class once and an Anthropology once. You then retook the classes and got A or B grades in all of them. So did you actually get a total of four Fs? The reason I ask is that it looks like you are planning to go to medical school and you should be aware that when AMCAS makes up your transcript and calculates your GPA which it then sends to each medical school you apply for they do not recognize academic renewal or replacing Fs with the higher grade if you retake the class. Each grade you received will be recorded separately and used to calculate your GPA. If the History and Anthropology courses you failed were each 3 semester units, your AMCAS transcript will show:

course units Grade credits attempted grade points
Historyxxx 3 F 3 0
Historyxxx 3 F 3 0
Historyxxx 3 A 3 12
Historyyyy 3 F 3 0
Historyyyy 3 A 3 12
Anthropology 3 F 3 0
Anthropology 3 B 3 6

For these classes your GPA will be 30/21 = 1.42

Your two Cs in Philosophy and English bring that up to 46/27 = 1.70

Now for the really bad news, lets add 2 semesters of Biology, 2 semesters of Chemistry, 2 semesters of Calculus and a semester of Physics and all are worth four credits each with grades of A.

You have a GPA for all the courses you have taken of 142/55 = 2.58

This is not even remotely competitive for any medical school in the country. You need to have at least a 3.5 to be competitive at any medical school, even if you graduate from UCLA. Even after retaking the four Fs, combined with the two Cs, 7 semesters of A in 4 unit science classes only raised your GPA by 2.58-1.70 = .88 points.

You had better start taking a more serious attitude towards you liberal arts classes because even at this point it is going to take a superhuman effort to get your cum. AMCAS GPA to a level that is not an auto-reject by every medical school in the United States. Another F or D or even a couple of Cs are going to push you beyond the point of no return.

When I was in community college, I was told by a few people that I would not get into UC Davis, even if I got all A’s in my community college, due to my F’s that I got at San Jose State back in 2001-2002. They also told me I would be LUCKY if I even got back into San Jose State. I told them to pound sand. They called me delusional. I’m glad I ignored them and applied anyway.

When you apply, emphasize in your personal statement that your MAJOR GPA is a 3.XX. Also, give some other reasons in your statement why they should accept you. Also, apply to Irvine, Davis, and yes even Riverside, as other potential UCs. Also, find out some information on which Cal States are strong in the field that you’re interested in going into, and apply to a few of those as backups.
