I am finishing up my freshman year with a dismal 2.0+ GPA.
1st Semester
Rhetoric- A
UGS- A
Precal- C-
Biology 311C - C-

2nd Semester:
Calculus- F
Chemistry- C-
Biology2- C-
Government- C+(B- if I’m lucky)
Anthro- B
PE class- A

I thought first semester was a fluke, so I thought I could make up for it by piling on all my classes 2nd semester. This was a huge mistake, I took on too many courses, and it shows in my grades. I take full responsibility and have finally (although later than I would have hoped) learned a method of studying that works for me.

My question is: Since I failed Calc 1 at UT, can I retake it at community college? and if I can, will my F be averaged with the new grade, or am I stuck with the F being calculated into my gpa?

followup question: Will my poor grades negatively affect my chances of transferring into another major? I am a current biology major but have shadowed a geologist and now I am incredibly interested in geology.

Maybe you should go talk to an advisor. I have a feeling if you leave UTA to go take a class at a CC they might not even let you back in with your poor performance. You are definately on thin ice. I would say yes they do negatively affect your chances of transferring to another major.

You can take the course at a CC during the summer to get credit for it, but it won’t erase the F. Some majors restrict the courses you can take at a CC during the long semester, but geology may not.

Talk to an adviser about changing majors. You aren’t the first person this has happened to.

“Students must have completed 24 hours in residence at UT and have a minimum 2.75 GPA in order to apply and the people we admit are usually closer to 3.0-3.3 GPA or higher (depends on pool).”

You had til April 1 to drop classes
“April 1
Monday Last day an undergraduate student may, with the dean’s approval, withdraw from the University or drop a class except for urgent and substantiated, nonacademic reasons.
Last day an undergraduate student may change registration in a class to or from the pass/fail basis.
Last day to apply for an undergraduate degree.
Last day an undergraduate student may register in absentia.”

And you had til May 3 to drop 1 class using One-Time-Exception,
May 3
Friday Last class day except in the School of Law.
Last day to submit master’s report, recital, thesis, doctoral dissertation, or treatise to the graduate dean.
Last day a graduate student may, with the required approvals, drop a class or withdraw from the University.

One-Time-Exception:
" Undergraduate students who may not have urgent, substantiated, nonacademic reasons will be allowed to drop a single class or withdraw from the University after the deadline to drop or withdraw for academic reasons under the provisions of the One-Time-Exception (OTE). The OTE may be invoked only once during the student’s entire undergraduate college career regardless of the college the student was enrolled in at the time the exception was allowed. The provisions of the OTE are as follows.
General Provisions

The OTE does not apply to students in the Graduate School, the College of Pharmacy, the LBJ School of Public Affairs, the School of Law, or the School of Information.
A student must request the OTE from the student’s dean’s office by the last class day. Forms must be returned to the student’s dean’s office before the first day of final exams.
Any drop or withdrawal allowed under the OTE will be subject to the same academic and financial aid rules governing other drops or withdrawals taken during the semester."

If you retake the calculus at UT, the new grade you earn will replace the F for GPA calculation. It is possible though the F will still appear on your transcript but it will not be calculated into your GPA. If you take it at CC it will be a transfer credit and replace the F. You should not retake the course at UT unless you are absolutely sure you can do very well next time. Best of luck!

Frank05150- I worded my question funny, apologies, I meant to say the retakes would be during the summer at a cc as a transient student. I intend on staying at the university. However thank you for your honesty!

lisiatc- I have talked to my advisor about possible major switches, and she highly encourages it. but she hasn’t been much help besides “I’m sure you’ll be fine, good luck!” thank you though! Also, I went to an internal transfer info session, and the advisor there said (and actually encouraged) to take as much math/physics requirements at cc as possible XD

Yaya- I went to one of the internal transfer sessions earlier in the semester, so I have a plan of attack (so to speak) to hopefully gain admission into the geosciences college. and thank you for the information! I am aware of the drop/ote policy, and I was passing the class up until the last exam of the semester (which happened to be May 2nd) so it was just bad timing for me to bomb an exam!

I guess my next course of action should be to (hopefully) excel in calculus over the summer, and next semester learn from my mistakes. I have calculated many scenarios, and it is well within my reach to obtain a 3.0+ gpa by the time I need to apply for internal transfer. I can only hope the admissions panel like to see a good underdog story! XD

thank you all again! and if y’all have anymore advice: LAY IT ON ME! XD

Geology? That’s not going to work out if you’re getting C- and below in science and math classes.

When I was a (really bad) geology major a hundred years ago, we were required to take (or test out of) at least 2 semesters each of chemistry, physics and calculus; the department also highly recommended Calc 3 and differential equations.

Your best grades so far are in social studies and humanities.

Sikorsky- sigh thank you for your honesty, I do want to give the sciences one more shot.

I have tried looking into other majors (government, geography) but I feel lost because nothing has sparked any interest (not that college is all about “finding your passion” but “finding a job”). So I was pretty excited when I discovered a joy in geology.

I know I can do better than what I have to show for it, but if worst comes to worst, I will just find a way to graduate in 4 years with a degree (any degree).

You might want to take that Calc class in Summer then take only 3 classes in the Fall to hit them hard & try to excel. Shoot for A’s. It’s NOT impossible, but it’s won’t be easy either. Work hard!! You might be on the ropes or down for the 8 count, but it’s not over yet, in all honestly you are just getting started. Don’t be like me & starting over at 44 years of age. Then again heck if I can do it, you surely can.

To be sure that you have passion in geology you should take GEO 303 INTRODUCTION TO GEOLOGY ASAP. Who knows, probably it will be no passion at all.

And if you believe that biology has good job prospective with only undergraduate degree, you are very mistaken. Job market for biology majors is horrible. And there is almost no chance you’ll make it into graduate school.

No offense but you don’t seem like a science/math person. I’m not either and there is no shame in it. I would give it another go but if you don’t do well, I would consider changing into another field.
