Theoretically, what would happen if I failed all my courses on my semester abroad? Grades are not factored into my GPA. All the classes (10 of them) are in a foreign language.

I know that I won’t actually fail all my courses, but I’m worried I might fail some, and I was just curious what would happen. Since it wouldn’t affect my GPA, could it affect my scholarships?

Well, at least the credits will not transfer back. If you are counting on them to graduate on time that could be an issue. Although my D also took about 10 classes during her semester abroad, it was because the classes were shorter (sort of a quarter system). So in the end her home college took them all and gave her the equivalent of a semester of credit at her home college. I don’t know if your college will show failed classes on your transcript or not. You should ask the study abroad office, they have probably dealt with this situation before.

Well, I’m a little reluctant to ask my school what happens if I fail everything. I feel like it sends a bad message (and as of now, most of my classes haven’t even met yet, so I don’t have any indication yet that I’m actually failing anything).

Why don’t you ask what happens if you fail ANYTHING? Think of it this way… the study abroad office (and the registrar for that matter) do not have any impact on the grades you are assigned (did you pass? did you fail? did you get an a/b/c/d/etc.?). Whether you are taking classes at your home college or abroad, the registrar just records the grades. They don’t give 'em.

And I am sure your study abroad office knows this is a secret fear of many of their students. You sure aren’t the first student to worry about this!!! And I am sure it has actually happened to other students, so the study abroad office probably knows how this was reflected on the student’s transcript when it did happen.

I would suggest you talk to them (email if you are already over there). If you are truly worried, do you have any opportunity to take some classes in English? Just to ease your workload a bit.

It would depend on the school and I agree with intparent to ask the study abroad office as a precaution. What ifs do not equate to I am ACTUALLY failing.

How do your SA courses impact your courses in America then? As in, because they don’t go towards your GPA, do they count as courses you’ll need? Are they just credits? Do you get a separate transcript from the university or will it just appear on your university’s?

My school counted our courses abroad towards our GPA so I am just trying to understand how yours works to maybe give you possibilities and what WOULD happen if you failed.

“Grades for study abroad appear on students’ transcripts but are not used to calculate the cumulative GPA.”

So they just count for credit. Like pass/fail courses, I assume? To be honest, I don’t need the credits this semester at all; I’ve had senior standing since I was a sophomore, and will probably be able to graduate early unless I do a third semester abroad.

So I guess I’m just not sure what happens if you fail to get the number of credits required to maintain full-time status in a given semester?

Well, I assume you also don’t want courses with an “F” showing up on your transcript for future employers or grad school, right? We really can’t answer this online. You have to get your courage up and ask your study abroad office to start with. You also might find out if they allow you to drop a course at your study abroad college and what the date is for that so it doesn’t show up. Just in case it is clear from the beginning that you might fail something.
