failing calculus. but accepted to vassar.

here’s the deal.

right now, i am failing calculus. and don’t even give me this crap about senioritis, it’s not that.

in any case, i was accepted to vassar and handed in my deposit. once i send in my final report, will they revoke my acceptance? i had gotten a’s all through calculus, too.

any help, please?

sorry- i actually have a 60%, as if that makes up for anything.

and also sorry about being so stingy, i was venting  haha.

well anyway, my final average with a d last marking period will come out to be around an 80. but will vassar look at that d and squirm in their seats?

I thought 65% and below was failing? At least that was at my school.

Anywhoo, yeah, it doesn’t look good for you there… most schools might take the b or c, but… F? They might rescind your decision if you don’t have a good reason (aka mono, parent’s death, shipped off to Iraq, etc.)

Edit: talk it over with your calc teacher… explain that if you were given an F… you won’t be able to attend Vassar (end up going to community college) Basically, cry beg and pray. Ask for extra credit, anything…

What’s your frame of reference? You seem pretty sure, but is it honestly based on anything more than speculation as to what you think Vassar will be significantly upset by?

I’m not going to Vassar but I’m in a similar situation.

I’m failing my calculus class as well, and after getting a terrible response from my teacher I called Smith and asked them what my options were.

We worked out a plan to adjust for this possibility. They said they were glad I let them know sooner rather than later.

So I’d suggest calling, it wont hurt anything.

thanks guys. i’ll call the admissions office and work it out. any other ideas?

If you have extenuating circumstances (you’ve said it’s not senioritis) than make sure to explain it to them. They will take that into consideration I’m sure.

all of you guys have been a great help so far, but i actually realized something.

i’m only failing this marking period, the last one. even if i were to fail the course this marking period i still have either a B or C average for the year (3 A’s, and the midterm + final will equal either an A or B). If i were to get so much as a D-, i would still even out to a B after getting an A on the final.

do you think they look at just the marking periods or the final picture, i like to call it?

Hm… I don’t know about your school, but at mine the third quarter grades aren’t seen by colleges… the only thing that Vasar will see is the semester 1, the semester 2, and the total year grades. I’d say if your average is in the B or C range for the final year grade, you won’t be rescinded but I’m no expert. And, like farseer0514 suggested, if you have a good reason for why you’re failing at the moment, be sure to tell them.

If you are in danger of failing a course, it is best to call admissions NOW and explain what is happening. If you’re too shy to do so, have your guidance counselor call for you (not the best choice, but still better than pretending the situation will go away while anxiety claws at you). Most schools will try to work things out with you one way or another, but they’re less amendable about doing so when you “surprise” them, so best to be upfront about the possiblity now.

Assuming your school lists grades by quarters or semesters ect, they’ll see it - a quick check with your registrar will let you know how this works at your school. ALL schools send final transcripts at the end of the year . . . call Vassar and figure something out.

ugh yeah…i don’t think i’m wholly prepared to call vassar. i’ll ask my guidance counselor to see if she’ll help me out.

i’m really trying to not fail calculus, but i guess i should prepare for the worst. hopefully i can figure something out with vassar, but i’m assuming the results won’t be pretty.

Wait… if your final semester grade turns out to be an 80… why does it matter?

what is a marking period? a term? trimester? midterm?

a marking period is a quarter of the year- each year has 4 marking periods.

yeah…dc89, that’s what i was thinking. but i wasn’t sure- i guess the final grade is more important?
