I’m having a tough time participating in class discussions in IHUM section. I don’t think I’ve ever spoken… and I’m one of maybe, 2 other people who don’t as well. I’ve raised my hand a few times, but I never get called on, and I don’t persist because I’m really bad at articulating what I have to say. Participation is 25% of my entire grade… even though I show up to section every time, etc… I got a B on my last paper… Do you think my grade for the quarter will be below a B? Especially if I get good grades on the next papers/projects? (I’m asking anyone with insight on the ihum grades in general)

I don’t exactly have the same experience that you do, but I am sure that kids don’t fail IHUM.

What would be the point of that? There’s no way you’ll get a 0 on participation. And if it is that low, just complain that you never get called on.

I don’t think Stanford gives F’s in IHUM.

First of all, do try to participate. Back in 8th grade I was also really quite in class but since then I’ve learned to speak up. It makes class a lot more interesting to be involved in discussion. It will also help you to express what you are thinking, something that will be very important in whatever you plan to do in the future.

That said, you won’t fail. If you get Bs on all papers and then a C for participation that’s a B-/B. (You get a C for participation if you do the assignments and go to all the classes basically)

Also, usually the first essay is the lowest grade for everyone. A friend of mine said some of his sophomore friends got Bs on the first paper and then aced the rest of the class. So you’re 1) likely to get no less than a C for participation and 2) likely to do better on the upcoming assignments. If you do your best on the remaining essays I’d be very surprised if you ended up with less than a B in the class.

i dunno, IHUM section for me is really informal… we rarely ever raise our hands, if you got something to say, just say it. if its good, im sure the TA would forgive you…

yea i got a B- on my first ihum paper… pwn3d

**** ihum. i really hate that class, and i can’t believe i’m paying thousands of dollars for it. it’s really ■■■■■■■■. they don’t make fuzzies take multivariable calculus. why do techie’s have to read f#$E#cking Plato? Herodotus? Diderot? argue about the meaning of life and death…argghhh

LOL don’t worry. I’m probably getting a C in ihum too.

i actually like ihum…it’s my favorite class, but i find it a little annoy that, as a fuzzy, i can’t pick my own humanities classes for the whole year. still, love my section, love my lectures, not complaining and it’s better than italian 1 or math! it’s sometimes annoying that they treat the whole undergrad class like we’re all techies who are going to make millions but who hate writing/english etc.

(P.S. I’m a fuzzy taking multivariable…math 51 might kill me :P)

oh, and from what i heard from upperclassmen everyone gets a B in ihum, you have to do something fairly extreme to get higher or lower…obviously this is a generalization but i can believe it
