Fair warning to transfer students

Hello all! I’m a current student at Montclair State who is transferring out this fall and I just wanted to advise other potential transfers of the way I was treated here.

I auditioned for the MT program in the Spring of 2012 and was not admitted, but was told I could re-audition if I decided to attend undeclared. As they had provided me with a small merit scholarship, I took them up on their offer and packed my bags for New Jersey. Upon arrival, I loved the school and the proximity to the city and prepared for my audition in the fall. When I met with Clay James to set up an audition slot, I was immediately put off by his attitude. Also, he told me to get in contact with him via email, to which he never responded and I had to set everything up on my own. He told me to try out for the upcoming production while I waited to audition for MT, and I was thrilled. However, once in that audition, he made nasty comments to the other auditors while I was singing, which really crushed me. It was unprofessional and hurtful, as he was the one who encouraged me to try out. Needless to say, I was not cast.

When my program audition rolled around in November, I was once again met with Clay James’ cold, harsh attitude in the room. Upon leaving, I felt confident in my abilities and was told I would be emailed within the month. When December rolled around and I still had not been notified, I went down to the performing arts office and was told by the receptionist I would probably not hear back until APRIL, which I found ridiculous. After another unanswered email to Clay James, I paid for another semester and loaded up on some dance courses while I waited for my response. In said dance courses, I have been completely exiled by all of the MT students, seen as an outsider and not welcomed in the least bit. I know that most programs are this way, but it felt as though I was in high school, being judged and looked down upon by the “popular kids.”

As it is now April and I STILL had not heard anything from the department, I went down to the office yet again today and demanded to speak to Kim Whittam, the head of admissions. She informed me that I had been rejected from the program and should have been notified back in November like I had originally been told. This, to me, is extremely unprofessional and I cannot believe that I wasted an entire semester’s worth of tuition and board money just to get a response that was 5 MONTHS late. I am not the only one who has been left out in the cold by the department, as one of my friends who tried to audition went through the exact same ordeal. Clearly, the department is trying to get more money out of its students by never sending out notification and banking on the fact that students will stay an extra semester.

Thankfully, I planned ahead and used this useless semester to audition for other programs and have been accepted to a few and waitlisted at others. Needless to say, I cannot get out of MSU soon enough and feel like I should warn others of what they will most likely face upon coming here. Clay James has no desire to work with anyone if they are not his precious MTs and will not help you at all. Please think twice before deciding to come to this school and re-audition for their program, it was the biggest mistake of my life and so much money was just tossed down the drain for nothing.

I was doing some research on the school because I just auditioned this past weekend. I don’t think it went as well as it could’ve but I apparently hear things very differently, my vocal coach is a very honest man & when I’m paranoid over something he has to put me to ease & get me to trust him when he says it’s fine. My coach said the thing, not about Montclair specifically, but schools that encourage people to come undeclared and re-audition. All they want is your money, even if it’s just for a semester. I was accepted into a BFA Acting program with a merit and arts scholarship- it wasn’t my top choice but it’s the only BFA I was accepted to. My top choice has a summer program that they encourage the rejected to attend and re-audition at. As much as I loved them though I dont think I’ll take a chance like that. Moral is re-auditioning can be VERY risky unless you know exactly what they’re looking for and/or you’re w/o a doubt their type & have immensely improved. I’m sorry your experience was so terrible. May I ask what schools you were accepted to? No program is perfect but we all want it so desperately! I wish you all the best :)

To triplethreat4:

In all honesty, your post was completely outrageous and I hope that people do not actually believe your clearly bias claim. It was your decision to attend Montclair this year, and in no way, shape or form should you be blaming Clay James for “wasting” your money. You were not guaranteed a spot in the Musical Theatre Program just because you attended the school for a year. I’m sorry that you would under this misconception, but it is not fair to blame Clay James or the school for not making it into the program just because you attended the university for one year. And that’s my two cents.

As to why you did not get into the musical you auditioned for…there are approx. 80 MTs in the program with 3-4 shows per year. The directors here at Montclair try to be as fair as possible and give every MT a chance to be in at least one musical a year. There were four freshman this year who didn’t get into any musical at all. Instead of pointing fingers, you should take a moment and realize that you got the chance to let the people who would be in the audition room hear you sing again, which could only be a positive thing for you! Another point that should be made is that most schools allow ONLY Musical Theatre students to audition for the musicals…at least Clay allows people outside of the program to audition for any and ALL musicals. This does not sound like a director who leaves people out and only pays attention to his “precious MTs” does it? Just something to consider…

Once my D made the decision to attend a program last year (not Montclair), I stopped reading the individual school boards so did not see this post when it initially came out almost a year ago. Now that my D is considering transferring to a different program, I am starting the research process again and just read this post. Thank you triplethreat4 for sharing your experience. In a way, I think it wold have been more helpful to read on the general MT forum because this can happen at any school, not just Montclair. Unless you will be completely satisfied with the non-auditioned options, it is not a path I would recommend to my D.

I feel SavannahSmiles’ comments were defensive of the program and unfeeling. That the department didn’t inform you of your rejection to the program when they were supposed to is horribly unfair to you. And SavannahSmiles is wrong about “most schools” only allowing their MTs to audition for shows. That being said, I think you went into the school undeclared with your eyes only half open. I understand you did what you could by taking additional classes related to the major, but if you didn’t know that although the auditions were open to all they try to cast all the MTs in at least one show every year, then you didn’t know enough about the program. I can’t stand hearing about the other students being unwelcoming. I am sure it happens in many programs, but it is so hurtful. I wish young adults were more aware of how their actions can affect people.

I am so sorry for you that you went thru this and hope you ended up in a program where you feel valued. Care to share where you ended up and if you are happy now? (If you are even reading CC anymore)

Tagging @triplethreat4 in case s/he is still around on CC but I don’t think so – only made this 1 post!

Last year when we were looking at Montclair I asked Clay James about this and though he wouldn’t discuss specifics, he said something to the effect of, “Believe me, there is another side to the story.” There usually is.

There are some seriously sour grapes in triplethreat4’s w(h)ine!
