Does anybody have a classmate (or anybody they know really) who puts on a fake accent?

Okay, so it’s back to school already for me. There’s a girl in my class who went to England for a year, now she’s back she’s putting on an accent. And yes I know she is putting it on because a) it sounds fake in an almost mocking way, b) when she is excited and speaking really quickly it slips away, c) people in England laughed at her un-English accent.
It isn’t that I dislike English accents, I adore them, we had an awesome exchange student last term and I loved how she spoke!
Anyway, it just irritates me.

■■■■■, yes! There was a girl in a couple of my classes this past year that always put on this fake German accent. I knew it was fake because 1.) it would only pop up sometimes (like when she was reading aloud in class so everyone had to hear) and there would be no trace of it any other time, and 2.) I’ve known her since 7th grade and she never had any kind of accent before. It was so irritating because it was soooooo bad and didn’t sound real at all!

she’s simply asking us if we’ve ever encountered someone who has a fake accent and proceeds to share with us an anecdote. i fear for your well being in social situations.

It didn’t really come off that way, especially the first sentence, ESPECIALLY because the first sentence of the thread indicated what we’re supposed to talk about

There are these couple of Asians who are practically brainwashed by Peter Chao. They keep talking in Chinese accents and it’s ****ing me off. And I’m Chinese myself! It was funny for some time, but then it turns to all the time and it’s so annoying! :O

I went to Germany a couple of years ago and I admit that I thought that it would be cool to, ahem, exaggerate my speaking. Haha, now I look back on it and think, “wow, that was one of the stupidest things that I have ever done,” not to mention embarrassing. My parents kept on getting mad at me for doing it, and I do not blame them.

There was this other girl that I remember though and she would always tell everybody she was from England and try and do this ridiculous accent. It was before my whole incident occurred, but it just makes me cringe at how stupid it was not only that she did that, but that I did a stupid accent as well.

When I came back from England, I had a bit of a British accent (lived there for awhile when I was young). Then I moved to California where I acquired another accent. By the time I came back to Michigan, it sounded like I had a fake British accent and a bad cold. Meh.

When my mom was growing up, her classmates thought she had a fake accent too. She had a Spanish/British mixed accent. You can hear both of our accents still when we are drunk.

I don’t think I’ve encountered anyone else with a fake accent.

Hahaha, I do that sometimes too! Not in any particular accent, I just use really odd pronunciations for fun. No one ever thinks I’m serious though, and if they did, I’d make sure they knew I was just kidding :D

As for the OP, the girl probably just wants attention. I can see the appeal in trying to fool people, but there’s a slim chance that it would ever really work for an extended period of time. I’ve always wanted to move to a different state though just to see if I have an accent. I’m from South Jersey, so I know I don’t have a northern/NY-ish accent, but I’ve heard that people from South Jersey have accents as well so I’ve always wanted to know if mine is noticeable. :D

^Haha, yea I’ve heard that. Most of the time it’s from my relatives from the South.

Yea, I want to know if I have an accent too. I’ve heard of people from Chicago having an accent, but it’s kind of low-key, so you can’t really tell.

^YES! I recently heard someone say that and I was like “huh…?” cause I had no idea what they said to me. I don’t know why I find it such a weird pronunciation, but I do…

^^^My father says that, basically. I just mean that he doesn’t turn the “t” into a “ʃ” the way that most people do. It might be because he’s from the south, but I don’t really know. His mother says “humble” with a silent “h.”

Everyone in my school puts on a fake Pakistani accent when imitating the Desi physics teacher.
