Fake ECs

Could you put fake ECs on your application? Technically colleges wouldn’t know. Or if you did 3 years of something in high school, but you wanted to make it 4 years to make it look complete or something, couldn’t you do that? Would you do that?

lying is bad. So don’t do it. If you do get caught, you get automatically rejected. I wouldnt risk that.

Well I wouldn’t do it. My conscience would get to me…but other people might do that. I was talking to a freshman in high school and she gave me the idea actually. Hmm. I don’t see a way you could get caught though. If you were totally calm about it…even if they asked you during the interview, it would be alright…as long as you don’t spaz out or get all sweaty or something.

Hm…cheaters and liars continue to cheat and/or lie for the rest of their lives…and eventually, they always get caught…So, good luck.

I would not do that people…I’m just wondering if anyone else would. Man you guys make me feel like a criminal. :(

why do you have pink text? that’s what i want to know.

the entire world cheats at everything. either you are a good person and die poor and unhappy or you cheat and become rich and etc. Look at the richest man in the world (im not saying that money=happiness, and im not gonna start that stupid argument, but face it, in our society having money allows you to do the things you enjoy, rather than working) he obviously cheated and got a butt load of cash. Plus he dropped out of Harvard. Cheating is cheating and everyone does it.

lol I have pink text cuz I like the color…there’s a code that you can use, similar to the code you use for bold or underline or quote…etc. I do agree that to REALLY get anywhere you havta cheat, but I really don’t think I’d do that, like on the application. I was just talking about that like a month ago, how cheating gives power…hum.

“why do you have pink text? that’s what i want to know.”

me too. haha

My High School used to list my EC’s on my report card. Even if yours does not do the same, never underestimate the power of a small world.

Lie and you will get caught.

If your GC doesn’t mention it in a rec, or if it is totally inconsistant with your transcript it will raise a red-flag.

Lie = :frowning:

If you lie on your apps, you do not belong at that school. Period.

And yes, I do recognize the difference between embellishment and flat-out lying.
Embellishment would be to say you were Varsity instead of JV, lying would be saying you did the sport when you actually didn’t.

DON’T DO EITHER

Some years back, a guy was accepted into Stanford, was there for a semester, and then expelled for having lied on his app.

Quite frankly, I don’t understand how it is that the admissions committee didn’t find out sooner. Nonetheless, people manage to pull it off, but it’s risky…

If you care about graduate school/your reputation, DON’T DO IT!

and there’s this thing called KARMA.

It’s Stupid To Lie. Frankly If You Lie You Don’t Deserve To Be In That School. Sooner Or Later You’re Going To Get Caught Anyway. Why Be Someone You Aren’t?

"

Embellishment like you described is lying. Yes, if someone “embellished” their application in the way that you described, their acceptance could be withdrawn as could any college diploma they earned. Yes, colleges do take lies that seriously.

…which is why they have this thing called Honor Code.

Can a college actually take back a degree you’ve earned if it’s discovered you lied to get in?

On quick question: do we have to indicate shared positions on the common app? I know that Princeton’s app specifically states that they want to know whether or not a position is shared. The common app doesn’t specify what exactly they want. If someone put “president” instead of “co-president”, is that such a big deal? It’s not exactly lying. And btw, I’m sure that there are plenty of people who “embellish” on their apps, particularly in the number of hours of an activity.

to northstarmom–

I might have interpreted your post incorrectly… but it appears that you think I treat embellishment as the lesser of the two evils. I know both are wrong. I said applicants shouldn’t do either! I was trying to discourage applicants from embellishing, trying to note how there is no real “grey zone” with your EC’S.

I don’t agree with either embellishment or lying, but they are completely different things and neither should happen

People do both, they know that, they look past that.

After all, you can’t lie about something really cool.
