Fake ECs

As NSM says, “Certainly in the journalism field, if you were entertainment editor, but on your resume described your position as “editor,” you’d be judged as someone who is very loose with the truth. That’s not the kind of reputation that one wants in that field.”

This is a good point. I think it’s these little hedges of the truth, like omitting the type of editor in order to give the illusion that you’re more than you are is exactly what the adcoms are trained to spot. After all, high school publication’s editors almost always have some kind of descriptive word in the title; copy editor, photo editor, section editor, etc. So it does kind of raise suspicions, and at the very least, seems sloppy. True EIC’s rarely fail to mention that they are the Editor-in-Chief!

“its only a lie if someone finds out”-me, there are good lies(lieing to protect or to the police to make sure a tkt does not get on your record) and there are bad ones(to parents and family) id say its a good lie becuase you are not hurting anyone in the process and college dont pick someone entirely based on their ec but it does factor in, play it safe and dont, unless you play a sport in spring and your doing your apps in the fall then you can put it but wouldnt do it any other way, and plus you are signing that everything on the app is true

hmm i have a question. so for speech and deb, i made second alternate for states, and i might go/not go depending on who qualifies at the second districts tournament. if i dont qualify for states, should i put second alternate state qualifier, or just alternate qualifier? but if i do end up qualifying (if people decide not to go/win at the second districts tournie), but i cant go to states, then i can put down state qualifier… right? sry if this was a little confusing.

What did you acutally put? I would put state alternate. Or something like that.

I put editor because I edit. I’m a writer, but they also tell me to edit the articles in the ‘in’ pile at school for grammar and word choice. Just editing though, there realy isn’t another name for that. And I’m sure most people in admissions know that an editor is just a name for people who revise articles instead of assuming that we are trying to exagerate.

Actually, you are a "copy editor. "

A writer and copy editor.

We have someone else with that title, though there’s only one person with it, and other regional newspapers have like 3 or 4 people copy edit.

The main reason I didn’t add any words besides ‘editor’ was becaue it wouldn’t have fit on the line.

In my resume I described what I did more (I sent a two page chart with extra stuff), so they can tell I’m a copy editor or whatnot.

This thread is really funny for a number of reasons"

there are many ways to check and verify. If it’s a critical factor, the adcoms will check.

ECs don’t make an application. Grades and scores do. Even so, adcoms have a lot of experience in seeing what does NOT add up. Think of the kid that has ECs that look like walking on water, and ho-hum recs. Does not compute. Reject. It really is easy to spot “embellishments”. Trust me. I’ve seen them.

maybe the biggest problem with lying is that it turns into a lot of work. Doing it can be pretty addictive. After all, the payoff, in the early days, can be far greater than the risk, so the habit grows. And the size grows. And the work of keeping track of the lies grows. And finally, the liar missteps…

Yea, a lot of folks lie, cheat and steal. Like that’s a good reason to join that crowd. And yea, a lot of people DON’T do any of that, and they do quite well, too. And I bet they sleep better and have fewer stress induced diseases.

thethoughtprocess, im a junior so i was just wondering for next year when i apply, bc i think if i end up qualifying for states i can put state qualifier. oh and i know what you mean, im on the paper and we have copy editors, but if you submitted more to explain then im sure the colleges will decide what to call your position

newmass, yeah, the EC’s have to be consistent with your grades/scores/recs - thats why you can’t save yourself by making up EC’s, because if you try and compensate, it won’t add up

Not that I’d do it, but my question is: how WOULD you get caught? Especially if it’s something like saying you were on a Varisty sport when you were on JV, or something like that.

I just want to post and say, if lying on an application would get me into my dream school, I would probably do it.

When I’m on this site, I often ask myself “If all Harvard wanted for admission was a 4.0 high school GPA, would anyone have all of these E.C’s?” and I’m fairly confident that the answer is a big fat “NO”.

That’s one of the reasons why I don’t really have any E.C’s other than sports and mentoring in school. I don’t want to do something because it “looks good”. I don’t want to be one of those people.

But then again, that is what will probably kill me in admissions.

Haha, where are you applying/how are you going to embellish them?

Sounds like some 9th grade girl.
Learn how to spell first.
And you don’t have to cheat to succeed.
Besides, what is success anyways?
Earning a lot of money?
If that’s the kind of success you want, go for it.

Wait who sounds like a 9th grade girl?

White lies are fine.

Are you serious? Like could they find out?

Is it bad if I put I’m editor-in-chief of the paper when there are two of us instead of co-editor? It sounds less meaningful. Or if I put I’m consul of the latin club, when I’m on of two co-consuls?

As co-EIC of my school’s yearbook, I think saying just “EIC” is fine. You’re not lying. If you decide to have the “Co-”, make sure you include “in Chief.” That way, they know you’re at the top, and not the co-lifestyles editor or something.

I put co-president where it was applicable, though now that the other presidents/editors have almost entirely dropped their responsibilities, I wouldn’t feel guilty putting just pres. I’m certain the club advisers would back me up on that, since they communicate solely with me about club things anyway.

Otherwise, just put co-. No biggie.

glasses: did you get into Harvard?
