Didn’t think I’d end up at UMD but I did. And I’m actually pretty glad. Great programs for what I’d like to major in, beautiful campus, not far from home, cool people, awesome fall and spring weather (pretty crummy winter but it gives us something to commiserate over).

Definitely. My junior year I was looking at really prestigious schools (in my mind!) like UChicago, WashU, etc.

What I didn’t consider was the money part.

I’m the first person in my family that will graduate with a bachelors degree, which is super exciting, but it doesn’t help when no one in your family is helping you pay for school. I worked my ass off in high school, which paid off, considering I got a full ride to my state school.

But with my grades, test scores, and etc, I definitely saw myself going to a lot more flashy of a school, like WashU or something, rather than the University of Nebraska.

I thought I was going to madison or minnesota, hoped but doubted northwestern. Had to wait until spring to find I got in to northwestern. Couldn’t turn down the prestige, but now my parents are poor because they have to pay 250k for my education. It is really unfair that one of my friends is going for a third of the cost when his mom stays at home and my mom works every day. Luckily my grandparents are paying half or else I couldn’t go while my friend could just because my parents work hard and save their money. Sorry for getting off topic.

Ashbod, kick some ass in undergrad and you can get some sweet fellowships or even scholarships at ‘flashy’ schools for postgraduate studies ;)

I’m the poster child for the “You never know where you’ll end up.” crowd.

My junior year self was sleeping three-to-four hour nights doing her damnedest to try to get into and attend the University of Cambridge, and failing that, into a top LAC or Ivy League. Failed miserably on Cambridge very early on, but even later on saw myself as a chic, lovely student at, say, Wellesley (my American first choice, which in hindsight wasn’t a good fit at all, but…). Or any LAC, tbh. I love the LAC atmosphere, and me not having a care in the world about sports, Greeks, or any of the “typical college experience,” definitely sought that out.

For my troubles I got the University of Alabama. Eh. That’s definitely not Wellesley.

By the end of junior year, I thought I was probably going to be a Jazz Studies major at Ithaca or something… I ended up as a Popular Music major at USC. My junior year self would be ecstatic to hear how things turned out. It’s exactly the type of thing I’d always wanted, but it was beyond my expectations at that point in my life.
