Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

@FUTUREUCLABRUIN1 I wish we could switch places. I just need 2 more classes to fulfil the requirement. I got my stats and 2 poli sci; I just need 2 more poli sci.

@rob3gd could you not just do the upper division classes only us history? I know you have to take 1-2 more classes like 96 or 97. I was planning on taking mostly US history classes and I looked up their classes. They have an impressive list of US history classes.

I have completed all history major courses. I would also like to focus on u.s. history or latin american history.

@nappysama you’re the best! thanks so much for answering everything and im currently in like this honors program in my college and I’m planning to join ags honor society next semester. (I couldn’t this semester bc their meetings were only once a week and it interfered with my chem discussion). thanks for the tips & have a great year in ucla~ proud of you!!!

@nappysama also if you don’t mind telling me, what was your lowest gpa during the two years in community college? and what was your highest? Again so sorry for all these questions, I’m just really serious into getting into ucla for next year fall <3

@FUTUREUCLABRUIN1 Same. Maybe we will have some classes together in the fall!

@History2Law From the website:

1.Two courses in U.S. History
2.Two courses in non-Western history from the same field (Asia, Africa, Latin America, Near and Middle East)
3.Two courses in European History
4.History 191

Also, you need 3 additional lower division courses (but can be replaced with upper division courses). They are also non-U.S. History courses.

@rob3gd I believe it covered by major prep on assist.org.

@rob3gd I also want to change my major to Poli sci, I will try when I meet my counselor in UCLA after the orientation.

I heard it’s impossible to switch to impacted major, but I will at least try. I’ve completed 4/5 (Stats, American politics, International relations, comparative politics) poli sci pre-reqs, all I need to complete my poli sci requirements is a political theory class or a politics and strategy class. I really hope they allow me to switch…

@rob3gd 1,2,& 3 can all be lower division right?

Ive taken

101 World Civ to 16th century
102 World Civ since 16th century
120 US history to 1865
121 US history since 1865
124 Mexican-American history
127 Women in US history
152 Latin American history
btw all those course numbers are the ones at my cc.

would my Mexican-American history count as latin america? Honestly the class is Mexican history, not mexican-american

@History2Law I think he is confused because of the quarter system vs semester system. It’s basically what’s on assist.org

How do you guys access your specific terms of admission? Mine just says to notify them if I get a C in major prep, or more than two C’s in other classes. The “maintain academic performance” phrasing is really vague (as others have said).

@FUTUREUCLABRUIN1 Actually I think he right. We must take those classes and they can be lower or upper division

Ucla history website:
“NOTE: The requirements for U.S., non-Western, and European history may be fulfilled with either lower or upper-division courses, but majors are required to take a minimum of ten upper-division courses in history. Be advised that the 97s (or 96Ws) and 191s cannot be used to satisfy the U.S., European, or non-Western requirement.”

So to graduate you need 10 upper division classes(191 counts as one). Also need 96 or 97. So 11 courses total.

@History2Law That’s not what I’m talking about, but I guess I didn’t explain myself. I’m talking about “Also, you need 3 additional lower division courses (but can be replaced with upper division courses). They are also non-U.S. History courses.”

I believe he is writing about this “Preparation for the Major: In addition to the three courses required in the pre-major, three additional lower-division history courses are required as preparation for the major. These three lower-division requirements can be substituted with upper-division history courses. See the Undergraduate Advisor for a list of appropriate substitutes. NOTE: Students cannot take substitutes for any of they courses required for the pre-major (1A-1B-1C; 20, 21, 22; 97).”
^^^^These LD classes are covered by classes listed on assist.org. 3 quarter classes=2 semester classes.

@ROB3GD As a fellow History major(admitted last year), there are SO MANY good history courses outside of the American field, it is ridiculous. It is not about “no interest outside of xyz”, a undergraduate is meant to have you well rounded in a subject. Personally, this quarter started a bill dull for me, but it is has picked up, took a mid-term and kicked ass in it. You have to remember this is UCLA, you have world-class professors giving lectures, they will make the lectures worth while, trust me.

@Tik1127 What classes do you recommend taking?

I will name you some professors that have been fairly good.

Peter Stacey- Just a brilliant professor. Had him last quarter, he teaches a philosophical style in history. Teaches a 97 and upper-division courses. You will write long papers for him, mid-term will be somewhere between 8-10 pages, final 12-15.

Arch Getty- Probably the leading professor when it comes to Russian,Stalin/Soviet History. Probably the best lecturer I have taken. For your mid-term, you will be given an in-class essay. There will be a couple papers(which one will be your take home final).

Langdon- Gives you no papers, he just lectures and lectures fast. At times he will begin speaking in Latin and you have no idea what names he is saying. Assigns a lot of readings, but just go by his lectures and course reader, save your money and do not buy the books. A great mind when it comes down to Roman history as well as Byzantine. Gives you an option, can take a mid-term if you want, if you do well, it will count as half, if you do bad, only a quarter, or you don’t have to take it all and your final will be your final grade. Easy grader, and pretty much impossible not to get a good grade.

Use BruinWalk, it is fairly helpful, it gives you a break down on the pros and cons of a professor and how they grade. These 3 professors, I have enjoyed quite a bit.

@Tik1127 Is bruinwalk like ratemyprofessor? So excited to be attending this Fall

Yes, it is similar to RateMyPrfoessor. When the Fall Schedule comes out, prepare to look for classes ahead of time. You do not want to go to orientation and do it there. Read about the reviews of your professor and make sure it is something that you want to take. Another aspect, make sure your finals do not overlap each other. I am sure your student aid’s will tell you, but begin looking for classes when the schedule is up.
