I was reading that the max units taken cap at UCLA is 216 quarter units, and junior transfers come with a max of 105 units. I have about 89 semester units, so I’m sure I’ll come in with 105 quarter units. My problem is this: I want to do all the courses required for premed, and still take a healthy portion of upper division philosophy courses. I was thinking of getting both an MD and PhD in philosophy and pursuing a career in ethics.
I figured that, in order to get premed requirements out of the way, I’ll need to take around 35 units combined of OChem, Bio, Physics & Math. This will only leave me with 66 quarter units for my Philosophy BA. Granted, I only need 52-60 units to actually complete the philosophy major, but, well, I want to take far more than that. How often are blue petitions to exceed max units granted on the basis of “I just wanna take more courses”?
Plato, where did you get the info about the 105 max, as an entering Jr.? Someone in here that I trust entered last semester with more and is graduating this year.
He’s talking about LD transfer max of 70/105. People can add UD to that (up to 86.5 semester). He’s just worried about how he can do all his pre-med stuff, which is a lot, before he teaches his graduation cap.
@Platocrat I have tried emailing admissions about your question regarding the unit cap. It is a big concern of mine because I do want to double major. It would be impossible to even minor, so it does not make sense. I had the same question with Berkeley, but it seems there that the unit only applies after the 4th semester you attend (for transfers). I am hoping it is the same at UCLA.
I’m so glad I applied to this school. I’m going to be super proud to be a bruin, if I go there. Honestly at first after touring the campuses SD was my top UC choice because the tour I got at LA was the worst I’ve had at any college, but the more I looked into things the more clear UCLA’s advantages became. I now truly believe the school is unmatched for undergraduates among the UCs.
Hey guys this is kind of random but it was bothering me all this week once someone said it to me. There’s this girl in my lab class who said that UCLA was super easy to get into as a transfer as long as you had a 3.7 and she said my major (communications) was really easy to get into and that i should not have been nervous and that its not impacted at all and its as easy as like CSUN. I think she’s bitter she didn’t have the 3.7 she needed to even apply and is poo-pooing UCLA because of this and claiming CSUN has a better Comm department etc. But I mean it is difficult to transfer to UCLA right haha I kind of felt stupid for being so ecstatic and proud after she said that… ugh haha just been looming over my head and I wanted to hear your opinions on transfer admissions difficulty.
@lcj1994 I would say that person must just be bitter. Congrats on getting accepted to UCLA! That’s a major accomplishment and no one can belittle your achievement unless you let them.
@lcj1994 guuuuurl that is not true. I had multiple friends with high GPAs (some 4.0s) who were rejected from UCLA last week. Comm studies is one of the hardest majors to get into at UCLA. The cal states ONLY look at gpa/pre recs when you apply. CSUN is a nice school, but it is not at the UCLA level. I think she was said she can’t get in. You can’t even apply for comm under 3. …7? That is to have them even look at your application.
She’s jealous my dear. She’s going to a good regional school, and you are heading to a world class school. No snide remarks on her part can bring her up or you down. UCLA is highly selective (18% overall) and CSUN lets in over 61%.
@ellie64, My daughter just got the call about same time you did. They have a welcome wagon, which is nice. They are asking if you’re going to SIR and if you need more info.
However, to all you wait listers, a slot opened in Communications. My daughter’s heading to Berkeley! GO BEARS! B-)
