Eeeh, never got around to working, lol. If I were, though, I’d work no more than 15 hours a week or so. That’s pretty manageable if you’re studying 12 units a quarter or even 16 units a quarter, as long as you budget your time wisely.
@onmyway8
They’re most frequently in the 4-6 page range. I have a 10-12 page paper due by the end of the quarter for one of my classes.
To be honest, I’d worry more about the prompt for which you’re writing the paper rather than the page length requirement; you seriously can’t bull**** your way through those papers. It’s impossible, so you better know what you’re talking about in those essays. Also, philosophy professors here seem to be a little more lax about meeting the page requirement; as long as you do a good job answering the prompt and meeting its requirements, they’ll be fine if it’s 1-2 pages shorter or longer than what they assigned.
@UCLAme@UCorUSC92 I just got mine today but I live in West LA so I’m pretty close to campus. I refuse to open it though until my status is updated from “reviewing course updates within the overall context of your academic record” to officially admitted again hahahaha
Is anyone else doing the sustainable living theme? Rieber Hall 3 North? BTW I SIR to UCLA just now and I’m quite excited! I’m also going through with housing, where is everyone staying?
I was wondering what would be the best option for housing? I am an accepted Chinese major and was wondering which of the transfer experience, Humanities, or regular housing was the best choice for me.
For anyone else waiting for things to be marked received:
AP Scores: Sent 4/19, Marked 4/29
Official Transcript: (Fall) Sent 4/19, (email confirmation on 4/22), not yet marked on MyUCLA
Financial Aid: still provisional (SIR on 4/19)
Maybe the official transcript is the one with Spring grades?
@apocalypso check out Hitch, remodeled last year and Saxon, reopening this year. They look exactly the same. My daughter got hitch last year and it was really nice (although she ended up not going).
Whoo! Preliminary transcript now marked as pending!
AP Scores: Sent 4/19, Marked 4/29

@anikom15 What extra curricular things did you do? and did you also receive a lot of outside help for your essay?
thanks for sharing, you gave me hope =D
@Cayton Hey, just wanting to follow-up on what you posted earlier re: the philosophy professors’ availability:
Part of what got me through my CC education was visiting my professors frequently during their office hours. I would create a list of questions, pick the most salient ones and then practice phrasing them to maximize efficiency, but I still ended up requiring at least 15 minutes per week of each of my professor’s time to best understand the material, to clarify things that weren’t addressed in lecture, or to find more material for study on the edges of the scope of the class. I also would bring drafts of papers and ask if they, without pre-grading it, could let me know if an argument was wholly deficient or not.
So I guess I’m wondering just how much time professors or TAs have time to help individual students. Ideally I’d be hoping for at least 15-20 minutes at a time during office hours or by appointment.
I received no outside help or reviews for the essays. My ECs were mostly volunteering in school activities and my leadership in the school’s physics club, but I also have some work experience, probably less than average.
@luckie1367 Wait, did you send yours electronically? I sent mine through the mail and haven’t gotten an email confirmation.
@lindyk8 oooh, those look nice. Kinda remind me of some of the colleges at UCSC.
@Cayton, if you wouldn’t mind answering this, I have a related question. In your classes, have you found that the writing skills you developed in CC were dramatically lower than the ones UCLA expected you to have? I’m asking because I’m also in a writing-intensive major and am worried that my writing will be considered subpar at UCLA. Really don’t want to fail a paper when it might be 40% of the total grade.

Anyone have any experience/advice with changing majors as a L&S major to one in HSSEAS? I know it’s almost close to if not impossible but just trying to see if anyone knows anything about the matter.
@apocalypso
CC did a good job preparing me for upper-division classes here. I had one professor in particular at CC who graded like many of the professors here. He had moderately high standards for papers and I took 3 classes with him; he assigned papers similar to the ones I have to do now, but that were slightly easier. His critiques helped a lot.
You’re unlikely to fail papers if you put in effort in them. To get A’s on them, I recommend doing the reading ahead of time, or at least before you do the paper(obviously), consulting with your TA/professor regularly in class and during office hours, and spending a good deal of time on the papers themselves.
@Platocrat
Professors in the philosophy department generally set aside one to two hours a week for office hours, so you’ll have plenty of time to consult with them. If you can’t meet up with them during their normal office hours, many will arrange to make an appointment with you. Same goes with TAs.
Oh, and in my experience, you’re not at all encouraged by professors here to go to your TA’s office hours first. The professors I’ve had so far are always willing to talk.
@Cayton Thank you! This is very helpful. So are professors generally willing to help you if you show them part of a draft, or if you ask them questions about how you can improve your essays? Can you approach a professor outside of class if you want to discuss the material, not just when you don’t understand it (like if I have an idea about a work, can I chat with my professor about it outside of class, or is that time reserved for if I have problems understanding the material)? Again, thanks!
Hey all! So I just sent in my SIR today (Go Bruins!), and I have a couple email questions:
Is there anyway to change your official email address after you submit the SIR? Also, will there come a time when my email address will be “metransfer@ucla.edu” instead of “metransfer@g.ucla.edu”?
