Thinking about applying to ucla as a junior for the 2016 fall term. I just declared my major as computer science and I see that in order to apply I need a 3.3 gpa. Can people with lower gpa’s somehow still apply? or take cs courses over the summer with all the core classes and then uses the CC GPA to apply?
@austin11soccer I’m sorry to say this, but CS is so competitive at UCLA you really need a high GPA.

Summer and Fall classes will be included in your GPA for Fall 2016 admission
After looking over Myucla for several hours, I’d make some changes to the whole interface I think. They should marginalize or straight up remove half the clutter on the Myucla pages. It’s convoluted and redundant in many spots. I’m glad they have so many options and pages to look over, but they need one, simple panic page for newly admitted students where the truly important stuff is clearly listed, like contract status, financial aid status, housing status, transcript status, contacts, etc. Just one page where someone like me with a contract to complete can just visit periodically to follow my immediate status to insure everything is ok and everything is being completed efficiently.
I mean, I know it’s all in there, but it’s mixed in with another hundred insignificant items and links. Those links are great, but only if you’re 100% in and secure at UCLA. Like Lindy mentioned, her kid couldn’t find the transcripts portal either, and that’s a major problem. She shouldn’t have to filter through a hundred other links on less critical items.
It’s like they mixed in all the links for students who are matriculated, with all the links for students who still have to fulfill several items before being matriculated. That makes no sense to me.
Venting over.
@fullload if it helps, on the My Features Tab, there is an option for add/remove features.
I used it to do what you suggested, which is keep everything important to me (right now) in one place.
One last gripe, promise. I remember a couple years back before heading back to college thinking, I bet I wont have to deal with the same transcript nonsense I did back in the 90’s, I mean, being in the age of cloud technology and all. I was stunned to find out the system is just as archaic as it was 20 years ago. It’s a complete joke. They are surely spending millions per year in this state in processing hard copy transcripts and dealing with the nightmare of logistics.
Meanwhile the rest of the world is using cloud based technology, developing servers that can withstand endless storage. How obvious and intuitive is it to simply store all statewide college and university transcripts on servers in a cloud system for all schools to access and share? It would essentially save millions of dollars which could be re-invested into the schools where it’s needed, and save countless hours of stress on applicants who are going nuts, like me.
If you wanna talk about dumb sh*t- I have to order and submit my UCLA transcripts to apply to UCLA grad program 8-}
That’s absurd, Candles.
Similarly, a UCLA counselor was a little concerned that my UCLA Extension statistics class ended in mid June. Because the transcript will be due by July 1st. I asked, well, you know it’s in Royce Hall, right there on campus right?
W-T-F?!?
The Los Angeles Community College district of 6 campuses is doing this cloud sharing of transcripts just fine, btw, so it’s not out of reach for the rest of the state to get on board. The technology and ability is there.
@fullload, I believe the educational system is the last hold-out to any new technology. I will say this, comparing UCLA interface to Berkeley’s - holy crap! Berkeley takes confusion to a whole new level. Literally everything is accessed through a different site. Billing you have to go here and resign in, classes you have to go there and resign in. Every site is designed differently.
Since my daughter refuses to post up here, I have been forced to repeatedly ask directions on how to get to places over on the berkeley thread.
Sign up for classes is also exceptionally vague, phase 1, phase 2, with no clear explanation. They are using schedule builder, which I think they said they started last year. Is UCLA using that?
Candles, it does seem redundant, but I suppose with a student population of 30,000 or whatever it is, graduate school is its own entity and undergrad admissions needs a form to send a copy over.
@lindyk8 I could understand a form that just said “please review UCLA transcripts” or something like that. But I literally have to order them as if I were sending them to an entirely different university. So basically I’m saying “UCLA can you please send transcripts to UCLA?” And then on top of that I still have to pay the full fee for ordering transcripts.
UCLA does have a schedule planner. But it’s not the most advanced system. It’s helpful but it definitely has some lacking features.
Yeah, I get your point candles. You should just be able to say send them over.
I can’t speak for schedule builder. It may be really good. I just wish that Berkeley’s site was a bit more intuitive. Of course, I’m extra on edge after last year. I’m so scared were going to miss something. There isn’t much to miss, but we managed it last year.
@fullload, not that it makes much difference in the long run, but you could ask for the sealed transcript from extension and walk it over yourself (next door) instead of waiting two weeks for X to fedex them next door :((
That’s actually a better idea, lindy, I’ll probably do that instead. Insane that I have to, but I’ll do it anyway.
Can you imagine the fedex guy picking it up and walking a hundred feet to deliver it? That must happen all the time. SMH.
If any of you technology type transfers out there don’t turn this whole transcript fiasco into a logistics and execution project in your time at UCLA, I’ll be disappointed. This should become a thesis project for someone to save schools millions.
I just heard back and I am safe!!! What a brutal experience. Felt like ages!
WHOOOOOO @Mac2000 :D/
Congrats!! <:-P
Getting back that email that says you can still come to UCLA is the best feeling ever. I honestly think that feeling felt better than the original acceptance I got.
