Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

@luckie1367 the transfer building is Gardenia, so if you apply for theme housing (transfer experience) then you most likely get it. Also list the ‘deluxe’ rooms since those are the rooms in Gardenia. If you don’t do that you could end up with people of any age, most likely freshman.

also remember that if you do the transfer experience you’re stuck in community bathrooms! so yeah, no! lol

Thanks @onmyway8 !

@luckie1367 Of course! Also, yeah, as luckyname said, you’ll have community bathrooms. But the rooms that have their own bathrooms seemed SO SMALL.

Hhahaha, good to know. I actually didn’t look at any housing on bruin day :-S so thanks for the heads up!

Is it hard to get into the Theme housing?

You don’t necessarily get the transfer theme housing as it’s a lottery and there are only so many spaces. (Last year it seemed like hardly anyone up here got it, even though they listed it.) Also, keep in mind not being with all the other transfers, but rather with upperclassmen, which is where they will keep you, will help you acclimate with other students, so you don’t necessarily stick out like a sore thumb.

There are pros and cons to both situations. Some want to blend in, some want to be with transfers. Either way you’ll be with sophomore or junior level. They might make an exception if you’re 23+ but I don’t know how that works as it is by lottery.

Thanks @lindyk8! Not 23+, so no exceptions for me :-??

Anyone take that course with the quiz to accept your loans? Man, it took me like 8 tries and 45 minutes of yelling at my laptop, lol.

Haha, I feel ya @fullload I did that when I took a loan at SMC. What a fricken pain.

Just FYI, the loan rates are going to decrease (I think) at the end of June, so I’m waiting to accept until then for my Fall/Winter/Spring loans.

Edit: I can’t find the link/article, so disregard above. I think I’m thinking of Plus Loans

@luckie1367 Yeah my daughter who was 19 at the time of housing request (20 by start of school) had transfer theme # 1 but didn’t get it. But she was actually glad. She got put with some sophomores/juniors. She liked the idea of being with students who had already been on campus. So I think either way, they work to accommodate you.

They make tou take a quiz to get loans? Thank god I’m not taking loans.

Hey @lindyk8, if your daughter doesn’t mind sharing, what did she put for the little essay? I’m a bit stuck

What essay? Was there an essay for housing?

Yes, it says

“To complete your application for a Theme Community, indicate why you would like to join a Theme Community”

I’m tailoring it to the Transfer theme, but I’m thinking maybe I shouldn’t, and also talk about the other communities…

@luckie1367. Oh, OK, I just asked my daughter. She said she never submitted to join the themed community. I forgot, there’s also the gardenia dorm for transfers. She said she put the dorm in as last option, not #1. (I’m batting zero here.)

So, yeah, I need to take back that you might not get it. I forgot about the true “themes.” Sorry.

No worries @lindyk8 ! Thank you for asking your daughter!!!

@lindyk8 After talking to housing, they said we most likely would end up with freshman because they are the largest population living on campus. Some people would be placed with older students, but the most likely result of not applying for the transfer theme would being with freshman. It also happened to multiple people I know who transfered last year and didn’t request transfer housing.

I don’t have anything against living with freshman, I’d just prefer other transfers/students around my age…

@onmyway8, yeah, I made a mistake. I forgot there was an actual transfer “theme.” I was thinking merely about the list of dorms, which is what my daughter did. (She didn’t apply for a theme.) So you’re right. Although in my daughte’rs case she was, I guess luckily, put with sophomores and juniors. But I can see how you could inadvertently end up with freshmen.

But let me ask you, am I totally forgetting this: even without choosing a transfer theme, you can pick Gardenia, right? My daughter remembers it that way.

Hey guys, What are your thoughts on overlapping classes at UCLA? I have one course in the Rolfe building and one at the Public Affairs building, which are close to each other, but the classes overlap by 5 minutes. Do you think that’s a big deal? Are there professors that trip out if you split 5 minutes early to make your next class, or arrive 5 minutes late?
