Is it very difficult to get the classes you want at UCLA? I’m a comm major and when I was attending SMC, it was basically impossible Will it be the same at UCLA you think?
@LuckyName I think so, but I’m not 100% sure.
@Manda001 probably similar to SMC. UCLA is a huge school.
If @Cayton or @2016Candles can chime in on this!
It totally depends on your major as to whether getting classes is easy or mind dumbingly, makes you want to pull your hair out difficult. The more impacted the major, the more difficulty in getting classes.
During your first pass, you can choose 2 classes. I was able to get 2 of my top 3 during first pass. 2nd pass is a total crap shoot. Have many many choices.
Also be sure to look for classes that are cross listed. Last fall I wanted to take a sociology class, but it was full. But in the course description it tells you it’s also cross listed with Labor and Workplace Studies and cross listed with Afro-Am. So while Soc was full, it was wide open in Labor Workplace.
@2016Candles I didn’t mean in regard to getting classes, lol. @luckie1367 and I were wondering if you can take upper division courses that you’ve taken as lower division courses at CC. Example, Abnormal Psychology, Developmental Psychology, etc.
Oopsie :">
In most cases you can. They are different courses. BUT I would definitely speak to your department advisor about the specifics. It may vary by major.
@2016Candles btw, what classes did you take your first quarter? did you sign up for two sociology courses and a random class? because apparently you can only enroll in two major classes and another from another discipline?
@LuckyName
That’s the other benefit of enrolling in a cross listed class. It does not count towards your sociology classes. At my orientation we were actually only able to register for one sociology class. I however had one sociology, one labor and workforce studies, one communications, and one African-American studies course that I petitioned to turn into a sociology class. The Comm and LW studies were both cross listed with Sociology. So ultimately my first quarter I have for sociology classes. You got to get creative when the rules don’t work with you.
Fall 2014 I took:
Soc 165 -Soc of labor movements
Soc 124- Conversational Analysis
Af-Am Seminar on segregation in the 20th century
Soc 195- Internship
I should also note that I wouldn’t recommend taking 4 Soc classes at once. I only did it because I wanted to finish in 1 year. If you’re staying for 6 quarters, 2 Soc classes at a time is plenty. There may be 1-2 quarters you have to do more, but 2 is good.
@2016Candles how do you figure out if they’re cross listed?
^^^ It will say it in the course description.
Hey guys, just wondering how we are going to register for classes? would it be through our my ucla page at orientation? if so how do we add classes to our planners prior like we did at CC?? Thanks
Also wondering how many classes you are planning to take your first quarter?? :-??
@2016Candles Thank you! And congrats on your upcoming graduation!!
@LuckyName I’ll ask on my orientation
@Icj1994 I’m not quite sure to be honest how we register at orientation. I will be taking 12-14 units this Fall.
Any history majors looking at the schedule? I want to take 139A Civil War and Reconstruction with Waugh. I am also looking at 138A Colonial America with C.B. Yirush.
Is it best to take 96/97 the first semester?
@Icj1994 yes, it’s going to be through MyUCLA. So yes, you can add classes to your planner to make it quicker and easier when the time comes.
@History2Law
Best to get your lower-division classes out of the way as soon as possible in my opinion.
@lcj1994
Enrollment is through MyUCLA.
@Cayton Do we need any? Or just 96/97?
You guys stress me out. I thought we were suppose to pick classes at orientation… why is everyone panicking about getting classes now when no one has even signed up for orientation. How would we even know what classes to take. I’m a presociology major and I would need certain classes to take to get into the main sociology major. I don’t even know what classes those are. Plus I’ve done a lot of sociology classes at my community college so I don’t know what classes transfer over. For example I did intro to sociology at community college, but would I have to take that again at UCLA?
@lakeeshow310 You do pick classes at orientation.
You can look at the UCLA classes here http://www.soc.ucla.edu/undergraduate/requirements-for-the-major
