Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

Discussions are small classes with Teaching Assistants - maybe 20-25 students. Since lectures do not always allow for discussions and Q & A, discussions allow for that. The TA will go over what was discussed in lecture that week. If the TA is good, it will really help you understand the material better. If they’re not too good, then you begin to think of it as a time sucker. Classes with discussions, often attach a percentage of your grade to attending discussions - maybe 10% or so.

@2016Candles AHHH!! you have to click the little triangle next to the checkbox to have the discussions drop down. You’re so smart! :stuck_out_tongue:

^^^^ :))

@Ellie64
Good for you! I didn’t have to pay either last year. I think people who got application fee waivers don’y have to pay the SIR fee.

@dannyn94
There’s a housing essay? Do you mean housing application?

Well, they do take your application preferences seriously, but they can only accommodate so many people in so many ways. I felt that my preferences got me the kind of roommates I wanted and the kind of dorm I wanted, but it’s all a lottery anyway. Some people aren’t so lucky, but most transfers/freshman seem satisfied with their housing situations.

Think of the application preferences you state as influencing the lottery somewhat.

You submit an essay if you request theme housing. This is specifically why I did not request theme housing.

@anikom15
Jesus Christ that is some bull****

@Cayton and @anikom15 it’s not an “essay.” People have said you just need to write a few sentences (most likely a paragraph) and be brief about why you want to be in the transfer experience.

…I wrote 3 paragraphs

oops

@Cayton @anikom15 @luckyname, yeah I remember that from about a week ago when you asked about it luckie. I was really kind of shocked that an essay was required. But you know for the decal courses at Berkeley - they’re the student run P/NP 1-2 unit courses - my daughter was telling me, most are not first come first served, you have to write an essay or answer a bunch of questions and the students pick and choose if you can grace them with your presence. There was one for networking or something, but run by some haas students and the criteria was really over the top to even get considered. You had to sell them on why your networking experience or qualifications would make you better network potential than the next student.

Kind of like speed dating.

Luckie, re housing essay, in those situations, quantity trumps quality any day, haha.

Well it doesn’t really matter to me if it’s just a few sentences or a few paragraphs. Writing essays about myself gives me anxiety. Some people enjoy writing about themselves.

Anyone know when the housing offers are emailed? I go on a volunteering trip outside of the United States on the 18th of June so I won’t be able to check my email and I really don’t want to miss the due date to accept the offer.

@odaback within the next week

@lindyk8 that sounds insane! I didn’t know that about the De-Cal classes.

Re: transfer housing: Its not so much that I like writing about myself, I just tried to explain why living in a transfer theme would be good for me, what kind of diversity I would bring to the floor, that I work well with others, yada yada.

I wonder how they decide though, I think Regents get first choice, but then do they look at just the essays? Does anyone know?

Hey guys, does anyone remember how long it roughly took to complete that educational planner survey? I had it on the back burner because of finals but need to get it done today. @luckie1367 @LuckyName @fullload

@Mac2000 it depends on how detailed you are in your responses. it took me an hour (half an hour each day for two days).

@luckyname Nice, thank you! Is it required to split it up into two days or did you just choose that?

@mac2000 I chose it, haha. I got bored and didn’t want to continue it.

@AlAlchemist so you’re gong to go to ucsd? sorry about ucla, but i think you’re a hardworking student and you can succeed no matter what the outcome is! im trying transfer for fall of 2016. What’s your best advice for me?

@AlAlchemist I messed up during this spring semester… and my gpa is probably a 3.3 right now… it dropped so much because before, it was like 3.8 ): What are my chances of getting into the college now?

You guys… I can’t believe we got into UCLA. Friendly reminder to pat yourself on the back once again! Haha :)) <:-P >:D< B-)
