Im really worried. Do we have to know what classes we need before orientation?? I really am having trouble figuring out which classes I’ve already satisfied and I’m scared everyone will have all their schedules planned out before orientation and ill be going in blind Ugh anxiety x 100000
@lcj1994 I’m incredibly worried myself. I want to take the introductory linguistics course so I can either minor in ling or go for one of the joint majors like anthro and ling, but that class is basically filled up! I only see 1-3 spots left in the three available sections I’m quite anxious myself.
@LuckyName congrats! Where are you now?
@Manda001 does your MyUCLA show them as received? I sent my Preliminary transcript in April, which I think is why my DAR is updated with it.
@icj1994 I think you should probably have some idea, but I don’t think you HAVE to. I’ve looked into mine and created some possible schedules, since I need to work around my work schedule.
@zettasyntax the departments hold spots in most classes for freshman and transfers, so don’t panic!! Does it say on the schedule if spots are held?
To anybody who has any doubts, I just called to get my orientation date (session 207, August 27th) moved up. They told me they had available seats in sessions 202 through 206. I asked to be put in session 202 and the whole call took less than 2 minutes. So if you feel you must have an earlier date, don’t hesitate to give them a ring. There is the $10 fee for changing, though.

@Icj1994 SERIOUSLY, AGAIN? My god. This isn’t the first time you post this. Like dude, if you don’t want to do your own researh pertaining to your major, then stop complaining. You’ll have to do it when you meet with your student advisor. It took me hours to understand the full psychology major and create my plan for my next two years. If you won’t dedicate time to learning about it, then that’s on YOU. But stop it with the sob story.
@luckie1367 It does say that some seats are held for students enrolling at new student orientation. Does that mean just because a section is closed, it may not actually be closed? The first section of ling 20 is now officially filled up and that’s pretty much the one course that I need to take my first quarter. I had a friend that took it this past winter quarter and he hated it, so maybe I could get lucky and some students won’t actually like ling and space will open up? I know it bores some people
@zettasyntax exactly. The class may say 130, but the department may close it at 120, leaving 10 spaces for incoming students (I have no idea of the actual numbers, I made these up). You can always crash classes and see if the prof is adding anyone.
@Icj1994 you assist page tells you the equivalent at UCLA for your classes.
@lcj1994 whatever your major is go to the webpage and create a spreadsheet or list of all the necessary courses/electives. It will also note the major pre-reqs, which you will have more or less completed via assist (as luckie noted). Then just start looking through the fall schedule and create several variations of options based on your list. Ideally, there is at least 1 key course you get in there, but sometimes that doesn’t work. The more variables you go in with (noted by preference), the better the outcome, so you don’t stress out like a crazy person once there.
A lot of classes that seem full won’t be – or will open up when the term starts, as ppl switch around.
I REALLY suggest making a spreadsheet or simple list of course options that fulfill the major that you can easily work off of.
Another thing, if there are a couple of courses you really want, check a bunch of other terms. If one course is offered every single term and the other is offered sporadically, grab the sporadic one as you might never see it again in your lifetime.
And don’t forget bruinwalk, ninja courses and rate my professor for prof reviews. Crucial!!
^Yep, lindy hit the nail on the head
Im sure you made a list, @luckie1367. You’re my type of gal! B-) =))
…I made several lists actually. My neurotic tendencies got the better of me @-)
If it helps anyone, I did as lindy posted and made a list of all the classes I need for my major. I separated them by requirements (i.e so many from group A, so many from group B, possible lab courses, and other upper division). I then went though the Fall catalog and noted what times worked with my work schedule.
Then I made another list that had the different professors teaching the courses and their bruinwalk ratings. I then made 2-3 tentative schedules based off of my preferences.
I also have a spreadsheet with a rough 2 year outline of the requirements, so I have some idea what every thing looks like.
Yep, that’s the way to do it. ^^^^
Leave no stone unturned.
Although I consider that one giant list with variations.
Seriously, though, you go in prepared like that, you won’t really stress, you’ll have a good handle on how your future terms are playing out, and how much leeway you have for fun electives, etc.
@lindyk8 @luckie1367
Do you guys know where to find when certain classes will be offered(not just Fall/tentative for this school year)? I’m also trying to plan my next two years and I’d like to know when classes are usually offered so I can have an idea for 2016-2017. My current school has that type of information but I can’t seem to find that for UCLA.
@Lemanie I just used the previous schedule (i.e the Fall 2015 for the current session, then guessed based off the Winter 2015 and Spring 2015)
Yeah, it’s hard to guess. You just have to try and look for patterns and keep your options open. Also don’t forget if minoring or majoring there are some cross-over courses allowed. Really highlight those in red so you can jump on them when appropriate.
I pretty much did the chart for my daughter since I’m a list-maker and she isn’t. I didn’t chart out the next two years or really even guess, just mainly had a clear concept of the cross-overs for minors/majors to save on the total # of required courses.
Communications didn’t need a future plan so much as there are a lot of options, save for about three classes. But obviously majors that have sequentials or a lot of pre-requisites to the major course list need some tentative planning to keep from having a future bottleneck.
As I recall from last year there started to be an upcoming spring list formulating in places, so I guess keep looking for it.
Thanks guys!
@luckie1367 Yes it shows them as received, I even emailed them and asked them to confirm that they have my transcripts that I sent last year just to be sure (I’m a bit neurotic too lol).
Hey could someone share the link to the fall 2015 course catalogue that lists all classes? Right now Im just adding classes to my class planner on MyUCLA but i cant get a description only the bare facts and times?
