Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

Is volunteer day mandatory?

Apparently

Is the Rehearsal for Bruin Life mandatory?

@apocalypso nope

Uh-Oh. what happens if we can’t make it to volunteer day? I have to pick up my parents from the airport, but I’ve already signed the participation waiver on MyUCLA :frowning: ahh. What happens if we can’t go?

@lcj1994

They’re not going to do anything to you. Volunteer Day is technically “mandatory”, but I didn’t go last year(Didn’t feel like waking up early in the morning to go pick up trash—that’s what my friends on my floor told me they had to do) and nothing happened to me.

The waiver just means that UCLA isn’t liable for anything bad that happens to you on Volunteer Day, like injuries or something(Though I’ve never heard anything happening on Volunteer Day). It doesn’t force you to do anything.

You’ll be fine.Trust me.

So far so good! I can’t believe classes start on Thursday!!

I hope I get to do some sort of teaching on volunteer day.

Some of the clubs on campus are really cool.

What is the alternate major that many UCLA English hopefuls apply to for a better chance (lower gpa admitted to that major, same prereqs)?

American Literatrue

@goldencub, you can also try the Comparative Literature major and then switch to English - they allowed that for someone’s D I know. It’s a different department but the English department is flexible.

Thank you both! Are people generally successful in petitioning to switch into English from AL or CL?

From AL most likely since they’re in the same department. From CL, I know it has been allowed.

@goldencub, last year I got an email from the UCLA English dept saying it is relatively easy to switch from Amer Lit and Culture to English because the pre-reqs are the same and it’s the same dept.

@lindyk8 even if one has a lower GPA? I’m guessing that they really only care if one has prerequisites completed and the minimum GPA required?

Not sure, @goldencub. I simply asked if it was possible to switch from Amer Lit to English as a general question. The response from the dept was yes. But – I will say, this was one person’s opinion, which is probably correct, but you never really know. Sometimes someone gets it wrong. But I have heard in general, you can usually switch within the same dept fairly easily, even in other areas. I remember someone last year after admittance to UCLA Biz Econ was told he could switch to Econ while he was taking a tour. He was really surprised. I think once you’re in the dept if they are inclined to let you switch, they won’t focus on the GPA so much. But I don’t really know. I’m only going, obviously, by anecdotal info.

And yeah, the email only mentioned the completion of requirements (their being the same).

@lindyk8 Just a guess. I’ll have the person who needed this information contact the department. Thanks!

Good luck tomorrow everyone!

So far, my experience at UCLA has been okay… at best.

@lindyk8
I think generally, if the major you want to switch to is in the same department as your current major, you’ll be allowed to switch, provided you meet all other necessary conditions, even if the major is very impacted, as in your example. I have a friend who switched from MCD Biology to MIMG Biology and from what he said, it seemed pretty straightfoward.

Of course, you can’t switch into most impacted majors if your major isn’t in the same department.
