Fall 2015 UCLA transfer students

Lol i kinda get that a lot. Alright sound goods :smiley: thanks Lindyk8

Agree with Lindy. Short and sweet.

@luckie1367‌ I was reading some threads here and a lot of people said you cannot finish igetc the summer before you transfer. Is this true? Has the policy changed? And will it jeopardize my chaances?

It depends on your major. In theory, you are supposed to finish IGETC by spring. If a major allows partial IGETC, you can be missing two courses, but it makes you less competitive. I was wondering about your doing three in summer , but assumed you had some sort of assurances.

However, there is IGETC FOR STEM, which means you can miss three courses - but that is only if your stem major accepts partial IGETC. Most do not.

For most majors that want IGETC, partial means missing one-two only by end of spring. Berkeley L&S only takes full IGETC completed by spring. Some other competitive majors demand full IGETC (by spring).

I don’t know what your major is, but I assumed someone had told you you could be missing three. You may have put yourself at a big disadvantage if that is not the case and it’s a competitive major. Since you are pre-med, is it bio? If so and it takes IGETC, it’s a STEM, so partial IGETC end of spring and taking three in summer may work, depending on their rules.

But i just remembered something. The three missing have to be very specific courses.

@Npham95‌ Supposedly, it works with any STEM that takes partial IGETC, although I also read it only works with chemistry right now, so I’m not quite sure where it’s at at this point. It’s a new program.

However, the three missing courses have to be these:

One course in Area 3;
One course in Area 4;
One course in Area 6 Language Other Than English/LOTE, for students who have not previously satisfied LOTE through proficiency.

If you do not have clearance to do IGETC for STEM (or are missing the wrong courses), than you will not get partial IGETC by spring. That does not necessarily mean you won’t get in. They could accept you with the proviso that you finish in summer. But you may not have filled the major requirement.

What CCC are you at, and where is your advisor in all this? Hasn’t he ever said anything? Have you ever talked to one? You didn’t know about the LOTE requirement being fulfilled by your native schooling. So either your advisor is (pardon the term) an ignoramus, or you haven’t really been to one much. You might not even need IGETC.

@lindyk8 thank you for such helpful information. I am a biochemistry major! I did hear about the partial but my CC is El Camino community college and they said they have partial for missing two. I have never heard of missing three. I honestly cramped max out units for the past two years so I couldn’t finished my igetc along w major requirement by spring (I really tried to plan it out). But I totally didn’t pay attention to it cuz of many told me you don’t need igetc to transfer.

I’m missing 2 from social science area and one from humanity area. I’m not sure what to do at the moment. I plan to talk to my advisor again today but I have been very on it with them and most just say I should be fine completing by summer. I’m unsure of what to do at the moment.

When does UCLA release its transfer decisions?

My lower division requirements include 13 science course so it was difficult for my to finish my igetc By spring.

18-25 days until decisions

@TonyStark93‌

I am so worried I have a 3.5 GPA and as a Math/Econ major missing 3 prereqs courses I don’t know if I can get in or not :frowning:

@Npham95‌ I just looked up biochemistry and ucla it says, “you are strongly advised, but not required, to complete IGETC, UCLA’s general education (GE) requirements or another UC campus’s breadth requirements prior to transfer.”

So maybe it’s all good. Maybe instead of IGETC you can aim for breadth? It’s easier.

tomorrow is april omg. The moment is coming up !!!

@lindyk8 yea I thought it will be kinda okay too. I just talked to multiple advisors (from new to experienced) and they all verified that my college do certify igetc by end of summer and UCLA will be OK with accepting it by end of summer. They said this is the general rule for science major and the fact that I let them know I will get igetc certified over summer is good enough.

I guess I will just take their words for it. I can’t do anything about it anyway lol even if I wanted to. Thank you for your help Lindyk8

Well you are in chemistry and IGETC FOR STEM mentions Chem specifically. The fact that you’ve done so many pre-reqs should’ be in your favor. Good luck!

I wonder why they just didn’t have you do breadth? Maybe IGETC is needed for another UC…

Sorry for calling your advisor an ignoramus, 8-}

@Npham95 I second everything @lindyk8 has said :slight_smile:

@TonyStark93 they generally update this page http://www.admission.ucla.edu/applicant/notify.htm about a week prior to release

I’m not sure about breadth but igetc is kinda a mandatory thing at my campus for uc and all that. I was just quite curious whether UCLA accepts certification for igetc by end of summer but the advisors believe it will be OK so yea I just hope my igetc won’t be held against me

Was wondering if maybe someone could chance me please?

Your GPA is a little under, but I think TAP and your ECs give you a boost.

Yeah, I’m having problem with calc. 3 too lol
