Orientation was alright. The student advisors there were super-helpful and knowledgeable. Luckily I got all the classes I needed with favorable dates and times. Though I could have done this successfully without guidance (my NSA even said that my appointment with him was the easiest he’s ever done).
Honestly I probably would have enjoyed it more if I didn’t have work at 2am (finally done a week from Tuesday. Hello sleep) this morning (left at 7:30pm, 1 hour commute to home).
The day roughly progressed like this:
7:30 Check-in
8:15 meet with NSA (new student advisor. Tip: they arrange themselves alphabetically, so look for their sign accordingly)
9:00-11:00 lecture on Bruin Pride, sexual consent, introduction to UCPD, resources available to students
11:30 lunch
1:30 Department Advising (major)
3:00-5:00 appointment with NSA (you will be given 30 minutes; you’ll sign up for a time between 3 and 5)
6:00 dinner
7:00 enroll in courses
I may have sounded lukewarm to it at the start of the post, but overall I would say New Student Orientation is worth attending. Particularly if you don’t have work at 2am the next day.
I have orientation this Friday and wanted to change my major from Actuarial Mathematics to Statistics. Would I be able to change my major at orientation? If so, how?
@Joey831
I suggest calling both the department to which you were accepted as well as the one you want to transfer to. Ask them both your question. I doubt you’ll be able to switch at orientation, but they should be able to let you know if it’s possible, what’s required, and what steps you need to take.
I switched majors at orientation (philosophy to history). I would contact the department you’re interested in prior to orientation. You’ll likely still be grouped with other students of your admitted major, but switching shouldn’t be a problem if your new intended major isn’t impacted.
I directly contacted the history department on MyUCLA, and they said to just attend the history department advising session. Before I even attended orientation, my major on DAR had been switched from philosophy to pre-history. Keep in mind I had all history pre-reqs completed, except for the one only available at UCLA (seminar).
Thank you all for your responses. I already had contacted the statistics department and they told me, “because you were admitted to UCLA based on you wanted to major in FAM, you will have to wait until winter quarter before we will consider changing your major to Statistics. You will need to have a 2.5 UCLA GPA.”
Has anyone heard anything from Housing about their Change of Assignment Request? First they were supposed to post the denials by the end of July, then the first week of August, now they are saying by mid August! I’m wondering if I haven’t heard anything yet that I should just assume I’m still stuck in a triple. Wondering if anyone has got approved! :o3
WAIT!! Just called housing and they said they would be sent out by this Friday. (Acceptances and Denials) Hope this helps someone other than myself lololol
@commgirl2016 Thanks for the update. I called them earlier today and they said sometime in mid-August. Gotta love the consistency, huh I’m really hoping to find out by the end of the week!
I feel only anxiety and nerves towards UCLA…academics are really in the back of my mind right now. I just started a somewhat lucrative business, working an internship, and I’ve been travelling all summer. I don’t mean to sound like an arrogant buttface, but I’m so not ready for the academic storm about to hit me. I haven’t been thinking about school in three months, so my brain’s not prepped. I’m majoring in Political Science, too, so I also know that besides law school, my majors not going to do much for me either (…and you can enter law school with any major). Whatever, hope I don’t fail out first quarter, HA.
@solostish You will be fine! You will become adjusted to your new routine. It sounds like you will be adding onto your resume now and during the year - take solace in that for future job prospects! Also bear in mind you will be graduating from UCLA! Such a name jumps out at people.
Are you taking three courses the first quarter? That is what I am doing, even though I am quitting my job and will only be focused on school. Three classes should allow for a much easier transition than four classes. Out of curiosity, do you have an interest in law school? I myself will be pursuing that path (as a history major).
I understand your anxieties and concerns, though I have also had more time to reflect on them (if I remember correctly, you are a first year transfer, correct? I am 22 years old!). I have come to learn that the only things worth worrying about are those that are within your control. Your degree is what you make of it. A UCLA degree will not limit you - only you are capable of that. So long as you have confidence in yourself, you should have confidence for your future! Heck, you are ahead of most of us here!
Also it says their office closes at 4:00 so I’m assuming they will release it all after they close so people don’t call them screaming because they didn’t get the room they wanted
@Remmigirl According to the TAP website, all applicants (whether they were chosen to receive the scholarship or not) should hear by this Monday, August 1st. Good luck!
