FALL 2016 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

@Edirol I understand your anxiety!

Friend’s D didn’t get a final answer until 2 weeks before the Fall quarter. She had to start another CC semester just in case.

One of our own on the Fall 2014 UCLA thread was denied enrollment even after attending orientation.

One thing you can do is contact Admissions and/or your department advisor and ask them to help you through your anxiety by checking their records of your transcripts.

Enjoy orientation!

At Transfer Bruin Day, I vaguely remember hearing about a suggested amount of units that counselors will have you take for your first quarter, so not to overwhelm yourself or rush into things too quickly.

I’m beginning to look at classes to sign up for, and I don’t want to inadvertently bite off too much that I can chew for next quarter. Does anyone know what that suggested amount of units might be?

“One of our own on the Fall 2014 UCLA thread was denied enrollment even after attending orientation.”
@Happy2Help - Do you mean this person was rescinded after orientation?

@Editor Admissions did not receive transcripts even though the CC says they sent. I’ll have to search for the post but I don’t think she used the word “rescinded.” Because of her case, I emphasize students check their DAR and Admissions when it comes to receipt of transcripts. We don’t want this to happen to anyone again.

As for how many units one should take the first quarter, think about the fact that there are 6 quarters remaining (without summer quarters) to graduate in 2 years. Transfer students need around 90 more units to graduate. Then look at your DAR, how many units you’ll need to finish your major and to graduate (minimum 180) and divide by 6. Minimum full time is 12 units, and 15 units x 6 quarters = 90 units. Of course if you add a minor, you’ll have to readjust.

Examples - My daughter took a 10 unit quarter and a 19 unit quarter, all courses with lots of writing. She survived and graduated on time. @2016Candles is an amazing student. She managed to complete her two years in ONE YEAR! Some transfers will need an extra quarter or two. To walk with your class at graduation, you need at least 148 units by the end of Winter quarter http://www.college.ucla.edu/commencement/checklist.htm#eligibility

I believe at orientation, you can sign up for 2 classes and they should be in your major - any prereqs you might need or start with upper division major requirements. Then in the next pass you can sign up for 1 or more classes, perhaps something outside your major that you’re interested in.

Save your summers for internships if you can, which you need to look into right away. Go to the Career Center early and often.

Thanks for clarifying, @Happy2Help !

I am a bit confused because on my DARS, it does not mention anything about IGETC. In fact, on my audit report, there is no “General Exemption” section available. I know if they are awaiting IGETC certification, it will have something like, “IGETC pending receipt” and mine doesn’t have that at all. My transfer courses are all up there but it looks like they just haven’t been applied towards any requirements yet.
Is it possible that although I checked the IGETC completion box on my UC application, they made an error and unchecked that box? In any event, I will call admissions today.

@Edirol, Admissions does make mistakes. They did for my daughter.

You might also ask if they will be available on the day of your orientation. If you visit in person, your anxiety will lessen.

Look at your DAR, page 2, for the following titles:

American History and Institutions
Entry Level Writing
Writing I
Writing II
Quantitave Reasoning
Foreign Language

Each should have “Satisfied by…” and either IGETC or “Transfer (course subject)”

What does it say in the section, General Education Exemption Status, immediately following Foreign Language? My D’s says “…You are exempt from all UCLA GE requirements because you completed IGETC.”

I see you had OOS courses and you also attended SMC and had IGETC sent separately. Perhaps some of your OOS courses met some GE requirements?

I hope this helps but again, go in person to Admissions!

@Happy2Help
None of my transfer courses have been applied toward any coursework yet, so it says ‘Needs 1 Course’ to satisfy.

I see this on my audit:
“Transfer courses and test scores will be appearing shortly
under the “Transfer Evaluations” tab. However, in the
‘Preliminary’ evaluation phase, articulated coursework
will not apply toward requirements. When the evaluation
process proceeds to the ‘Releasble’ or ‘Completed’
phases, applicable coursework will apply on requirements.”

So I guess they are still evaluating everything?

@Edirol, Yes it seems so. I’m surprised this wasn’t done yet since your orientation is on Monday. My daughter’s DAR was completed before her late July orientation, 2 years ago. My only guess is that your OOS courses are taking some time to be evaluated, even though SMC also evaluated them.

@Edirol I’m in the same boat. My orientation is on Monday and I sent in my final transcript revealing that I have complete IGETC more than 2 weeks ago and it still hasn’t shown up on my DARS.

I called admissions and they said they have my IGETC and all my transcripts. I let them know my orientation is on Monday and she said not to worry - I will still be able to enroll for classes and the advisors there will work with me if my DAR isn’t up to date by then. She also mentioned that they’re running really behind on this because they’ve admitted so many more students this year.
So, for those of you whose DAR isn’t updated yet, don’t fret!

Thank you for your help, @Happy2Help. I am embarrassed at how much I freak out in my old age :wink:

@Edirol wait until you’re a parent of a UC Transfer! Glad you called Admissions! Now enjoy the orientation!

Enjoy your orientation. I did mine 2 years ago and I somewhat enjoyed it. The day is quite long so prepare yourself for that. It somewhat irked me that they made us wait until the end of the day for you to sign up for your courses. I was thinking, let me just sign up now and I can go on my way. But regardless, it is interesting to see all the excited and nervous faces. I kept in touch with a couple of people in my group but I didn’t see the rest of the people(ever again). So I was thinking, did they drop out, get kicked out, or even change major’s? I don’t know.

But you will see a transformation in you rather quickly. Probably after the second quarter, you feel like a seasoned vet of the school rather than being wet behind the ears.

There are a few things I recommend you do while you are there(And throughout your time at UCLA and after).

1-Take in the beauty of the school and know when you’re at. Sometimes we are so busy, we take it for granted. Just pause, and take a moment to reflect that you are at one of the top universities in the world. There is a reason why you have been selected to study at UCLA.

2-All of the students are in the same boat. So, everybody is there to help one another out. UCLA is not an ultra competitive school, students tend to always help each other out. Meaning, just share notes and study together. Those that study together tend to do much better than those who decide to study alone.

3- You are now a Bruin for life. When people ask what school did you attend? You tell them you are a UCLA Bruin and if they say they are USC Trojan, you tell them to take a lap

:wink:

Am I the only one that hasn’t paid for orientation yet? When I signed up I didnt see it in BruinBill and still don’t see it. On MyUCLA’s registration status, it says “Registration Payment Status: Not Paid.” Is there anything I need to pay in order to sign up for classes during orientation? Mine is on Monday

@dkarbcs You will not be billed for orientation until early August (payment due in September). For all information about billing/ payments for orientation, see this link: http://www.newstudents.ucla.edu/transferstudents.htm#costs

Am I the only one who has unavailable Provisional Award Letter? Does anyone know when it will be available?

Orientation was a long and exhausting day. It was pretty organized, though.
-Bring walking shoes.
-Make a list of alternates for the classes you want to take - at least 3 or 4. The more the better!
-Don’t freak out if your DAR isn’t up to date. Mine wasn’t until the morning of orientation.
-You may be logging in to enroll in classes on your New Student Advisor’s laptop so do not forget your MyUCLA username and password! (This may sound like a no brainer but I had to retrieve my password a few minutes before enrollment, derp on my part).
-Try not to bring too much stuff. Just the essentials. You will be given so much UCLA swag that carrying it around campus will just weigh you down.
-Try to go to some of the workshops.
-Eat like a starved horse at the dining halls: unlimited ice cream!

@Edirol I was there Monday too, we should have had an old person meet up! How were you feeling towards the end of the day? I was dragging hardcore at the end.

@Oldhopeful - By 5 pm I was ready to drop dead!

Hello all,

I’m transferring as a Pre-Biz Econ major and I’m confused about what classes I should take. I’m one class short from IGETC and I already took all the pre-reqs, including accounting. Besides Econ 11 and Econ 41, what else can I take?? I would like to have it all set prior to Orientation so I have an opinion when the counselor gives me a schedule.

Thanks!

@imgonnagetin

So go to your my.ucla account and run your DARS (Degree Audit Report). There they already have all the classes you need to reach your diploma and you can plan according to what classes are avaliable for the fall quarter

@Edirol
wow! thanks for the helpful tips. sounds like you had a good day. im pretty excited for mine. it’s next week on thursday.

is anybody else doing orientation for july 27th?
