@futurelawyer88 It’s only the English majors panicking because additional foreign language is necessary as a MAJOR requirement, and some of us clearly weren’t aware of that lol
@lavaliente Ah, ok! Thanks for the clarification!
So, since UCLA is releasing their decisions 30 minutes into my calc class, i’m either going to be jumping out of my seat screaming like a gorilla or sinking back into my seat unable to focus on the rest of lecture… :)) 8-}
On friday I checked it at 5pm in the middle of this food court in the mall because I was so anxious the whole day that I couldn’t stay home.I just wandered and drove around aimlessly all day before I had to go to work…probably not the best idea because of what @MiniGrace11 said…be safe everyone LOL
someone a while earlier said that we need to find a way to hibernate til wednesday, lol. i did the closest i could today by falling asleep at 4pm and only waking up now.
38 HOURS.
@cmdchavezz I wish I had this power
I haven’t seen anyone mention the Music History major so I’m hoping that means I don’t have too much competition…
I have a 3.7 so I hope it’s enough.
As far as I know, passing two years of a high school language with a C or better fulfills the language requirement of IGETC. I really trust my counselor because she works closely with UCLA admissions, is head of the honors transfer program, and is highly recommended at my school.
When I turned in my HS transcripts to my community college my IGETC (and the language portion) was updated to complete.
How do we find our “major” GPA?
@amunroeee most of us are referring to the language requirement for our English major. High school foreign language does count for IGETC, so not to worry!
@BlownRose if you were relying on your high school foreign language to go towards the English major requirement of foreign language, you needed to take an additional 5 foreign literature classes. I doubt that missing this one major requirement will jeopardize your admission, but we English majors will all see tomorrow!
In discussing with the English major language stuff~ if you passed an AP exam that means you completed the additional levels of foreign language requirement (cause ya know AP tests are hard and advanced) so ya you’d only have to do some Lit in translation courses! I don’t think that would hold any of you back from being admitted! Okay good luck everyone it’s almost time!
You all are AWESOME, I love your camraderie, and I wish the best of luck to you in your future college plans! Please refer to the [UCLA Transfer Facts (2016 edition)](http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/uc-transfers/1887036-ucla-transfer-facts-2016-edition-p1.html) thread for tips after acceptance!
The rest of this post is to explain the English/American Literature and Culture majors’ foreign language/lit requirement for @uclahopeful2017 @maluminati @latrnsfrpls @lavaliente @andc123 @BlownRose
My daughter was an English major at UCLA – accepted for transfer in 2014 and graduated last year. When planning out her classes in her first year, she spoke to an English advisor at UCLA to confirm what her CCC/honors/TAP advisor who was an English department chair, was saying about the foreign language requirement. She also thought her high school language was enough.
The Foreign Language requirement is here and stated as follows:
All English and American Literature and Culture majors must have completed either
(1) level five or equivalent in any one foreign language or
(2) level three or equivalent in one foreign language and two additional courses in foreign language or foreign literature, including foreign literature in translation (see course listings under Foreign Literature in Translation under “Curricula and Courses” in the online General Catalog). “Level” here refers to UCLA’s college level of the language.
Transfer students who have satisfied the College of Letters and Science foreign language requirement at the high school level through the IGETC program may satisfy the departmental requirement with five foreign literature in translation courses. This means if you’re counting on your high school courses, you will need to take 5 courses from the following: World Lit, Bible in translation, Asian lit, Latin lit, etc. Check your Assist.org and also check Santa Monica CC’s assist list of foreign lit classes. Many CCCs don’t offer these classes.
The Department will give credit towards the major’s Foreign Language/Literature in Translation Requirement for any work the student may test out of in a UCLA language department placement exam or in an AP exam. Please refer to the “Credit for Advanced Placement Tests” table in the online General Catalog. Depending on your AP score, you will have met the equivalent college level for foreign language. You may still need some foreign lit in translation courses or additional language to fulfill (1) or (2) above.
If you didn’t meet these requirements, you may still be accepted to the major but you will need to take additional courses as it is on the UCLA transcript as a separate requirement. I highly recommend getting this requirement out of the way before transferring because the upper division English courses can be brutal (lots of reading material and several writing assignments) so if you have to take more lower division English classes to fulfill requirements, it sets you back a bit. If you can find classes at a local CC during the summer session somewhere, try to take them and get this requirement out of the way.
In addition, the foreign language requirement can be complicated based on your CCC’s level of a foreign language course. We learned that one CC’s Spanish 102 (covered through 3 years of high school) was not the same as the neighboring CC’s Spanish 102 (covered through 2 years of high school). My daughter satisfied this requirement by taking Spanish level 3 at her CCC and 2 World Lit courses. She had taken high school Spanish through the 3rd year but that would only meet IGETC requirements, and she also said the college level 3 covered a lot more than her high school 3rd year.
If you have any questions about the English/Am Lit major at UCLA, please PM me.

Reposting @champagnemami 's countdown
31 hours left!!
unless you have to wait until you’re in a safe place/time
I’m officially at the point of random, nervous laughter and fidgeting
oh sorry all! Didn’t realize you were referring to english majors.
How are my chances if the 75th percentile of admitted students for my major is 3.95 and the 25th is 3.71. I have a 3.9 exactly. I’m not sure what that all means.
Really wish I didn’t look into this stuff the day before decisions… Now I’m even more nervous.
@lucidday Oh my goodness! So close!
@lucidday Totally relate to the fidgeting and nervous laughter right now. Can’t focus on studying for my exam in two hours.
@champagnemami IKr thank you for creating the countdown and posting it.
@amunroeee ahhhhhh! I wish you the best of luck with studying!!
For everyone going into exams or finals, you can do it!!
@champagnemami I’m in love with your username. May or may not have a T shirt that says that…
