FALL 2017 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

I registered for orientation; however, I forgot to check early arrival and I can’t find way to edit my orientation reservation does anybody know of a way to go back into my orientation and edit it so I can check early arrival? Or do I need to call and ask for assistance?

When do we pay for the orientation fee? It’s not showing up on bruinbill yet.

Tik1127 is right but you may not be able to create a DAR until close to your orientation date, when your transcripts should be entered by.

IIRC the orientation fee will be posted after you attend.

how do i get other scholarships?

Sorry, I just wanna jump in to see if anyone can give me their honest opinion on my app, I’m applying for UC/CSU in the fall for Fall 2018.

I’m currently at a CCC and am about to do the application for UC and CSU in the fall, can someone give me a realistic review of my application. First off, I want to say that I attended a private school for my first year and dropped out because I didn’t like what I was pursuing there and it was an impulsive choice to study there. Only 4 courses transferred to my CC, and sadly I only got a 3.2 GPA (because of the pluses and minuses) in my science courses (BIO1: B-, CHE1: B, CHEM2: A-, Pre-Calc: B+) so idk if the UCs consider pluses and minuses. But here my current CC stats.

Major: Communications
UC GPA (prospective by end of fall): 3.89
Major GPA: 4.00 (currently)
Major Prep: All done by fall 7/7 (apparently there were 9 prep courses offered, so I’m taking all 9)
IGETC: Done by spring
TAP: Will be certified
Applying to: UCB(Media Studies), UCLA, UCSD, UCSB, CSULB (all Communications) and probably USC(Communications)

ECs:

  • One year volunteer at PetSmart cat shelter
  • A seasonal job at Pier 1
  • Honors program
  • Paid tutor at my CC (I applied to be)
  • Senator of my Christian Club
  • Church volunteer at two churches
(will have more EC’s by fall)

I try not to have a dream school to ease the pressure, but working/studying in LA sounds nice but I know Comm for LA is THE HARDEST major to get into, I feel like I barely hit the mark for that school and they could care less about my Major GPA. I want to work somewhere along the lines of business management or work in the entertainment industry, but I have been considering switching LA to Poli Sci(suggestions?). Can someone review me as if they were part of admissions?

P.S. Been talking to UC reps and they said some of my private school courses might not articulate, so I don’t mind having to retake one or two to raise my GPA even more.

Hello @SoCalx83 Im not a comm major, but I was admitted as a life science major, which are also highly selective, and I think you have a good chance for communications as your GPA seems competitive. While your stats are looking good, and given that comm is indeed one of the most selective majors at UCLA, make sure the remaining aspects of your application–your insight questions–are stellar.

Since you’ll be TAP certified, make sure you select an aleternate major on your application. You’ll have that advantage. If you aren’t admitted as comm, they will re-evaluate your application and see if they can admit you for your alternate major.

Sage advice: start your insight questions as soon as the application opens in August. TRUST me, you’ll be glad you did. On November 30th at 5pm you’ll be getting a kick out of everyone freaking the F out knowing you submitted a long time ago. Good luck!

P.S. be on the lookout for the 2018 thread, I’m sure it’ll be popping up soon.

@Negative273c Thanks for the insight, I’m a bit concerned with my private school GPA…I feel like that will be the killing factor to my application. The UC reps are still unsure what they’re going to do with that information, and I’m not even sure if those courses will articulate, but at least they’re all unrelated to my major(i guess that helps). But thank you for the feedback!

@SoCalx83 If they’re not prereq’s for your major, igetc/tap certification courses, then I think you should be fine. But don’t quote me on that. Your best bet is to keep touching base with admissions on that matter. Just be mindful that you still need to report absolutely everything on your application.

@SoCalx83 I got in as a Communications major this year, so I will give you as much information as I can.

I have a 4.0 GPA, did 5 of the required courses (I couldn’t find the other 2 courses at any CCs in my area) and had almost no extra curriculars (I had some volunteer hours and a few extra curriculars from high school, but that was about it). I did have a lot of academic honors to list, so maybe that balanced it out. In my experience, the most important thing seems to be grades and personal statements.

If you did the 4 required and 3 of the additional courses, I don’t know if it taking the other required courses will be necessary. For example, one of the additional courses is Microeconomics/Intro to Political Economy, but I saw in the course catalog that in order to enroll in upper division courses, you only need to have completed the prerequisite of either Economics or Intro to Statistics (from the required 4), which is what I took. If you are bad at math, as I am, I would say not to risk taking the Econ class if you haven’t already taken it. Still, I don’t think it would hurt to do all of the courses if you decide to do so. As far as your private school courses, if any of them are required for transfer, I would recommend doing those over, just to be on the safe side. I did that last fall because I took a Communications course in another state and I wasn’t sure if it would transfer.

You probably know this already, but another thing is that they will ask on the UC application if you are IGETC certified, so make sure you get that certification done with your CC. If you’re using your foreign language from high school to satisfy that part of the certification, ask your high school to send those transcripts to your CC. I’m saying this only because I didn’t realize that there was a separate form to be filled out with my CC until March, and the sooner that’s done, the better.

There is a box at the end of the application where it says you can clarify anything that you might want to explain on your application- I would recommend using that space to explain your private school situation with your GPA and transferred courses. Don’t write it like a personal statement, just be straightforward in explaining what happened.

Also, a heads up on CSULB- there were only 2 courses required for the Comm major when I applied (I think they added a third one for next fall), and I couldn’t take one of them so I didn’t get in (they said that they will consider students who don’t have all of the courses, but that seems to be a low chance, since it explicitly states on my application that that’s the reason I didn’t get in). Make sure you have them all done, just in case you are seriously considering that school as a backup- the CSU application doesn’t have anywhere to write/explain anything.

If you have any questions, you can send me a message and I’ll try to help as much as I can. Good luck next year!

@uclahopeful2017 Yes we are. I have registered for summer classes.

i think my message got mixed in with the others, so how do we get other scholarships?

@masechka1988 on your bruin bill for summer, does it show a fee for housing (roughly 117$ or so)? I’m not housing on campus for the summer but it shows that for me

Nvm I figured it out

@jaleshaiker I was contacted for 2 scholarships that I had qualified for. I think you can search scholarships on the UCLA scholarships page.

@SoCalx83 comm is def super hard to get into up until before the application was due I wanted to be a comm major but people constantly told me you won’t get into UCLA because it’s so hard even though I had a 3.89 at the time. So I decided to switch to poli sci because I did the prereqs and luckily got in (I’m still shocked because it’s also impacted af) but now I’m struggling because I don’t want to major in poli sci after taking this last prereq as it’s just isn’t for me and I would be more interested in comm because I ultimately want to do law school and work in the entertainment industry. Just keep pushing yourself because you never know what will happen! I recommend maybe even applying as another major if you really want to end up at ucla like I did! As for USC annenberg is also really fing hard!!! sadly I didn’t get in this year but I’m fine cause still got into UCLA but I loved annenberg way more and the program way more (but still glad cause USC was helllla expensive haha) . I have a 3.75 (it fell fall this past fall) which is still over the average and I was legacy and still didn’t get in. USC def made it harder to get in this year as many were rejected but STILL don’t give up because you most likely can still get in with a higher gpa than I had! I would recommend going to transfer day and getting close to the Dean of annenberg and etc. BUT DONT FORGET- you can always always get a masters in comm or journalism (that what I am going to do) at USC or UCLA so even if you don’t get in don’t worry too much about it! It’s not the end of the world!! Just stay positive and good luck

I’m really worried that I won’t be able to get the class schedule I want due to my registration appointment. I am in the fourth orientation session and am an English major; I noticed that English classes only have 40 seats per class… hoping for the best.

@dreamla Thanks for being supportive  I’m very scared but I will pursue communications, I just found out I got a B in one prereq, so idk if that might kill my chances, but I’ll still have all 7 done by fall. Anyway, do you plan on changing your major? I’m sorry you didn’t get to do comm. Wish you the best in LA!

It is important to understand that if you get a degree in one specific field it is not the be all and end all of your future and I mean this in a good way. For example, a very close friend of mine graduated with a degree in biology at UCLA and he is working in the mortgage sector and is extremely successful. I know many other stories like this, people went away from their majors and found plenty of success in personal satisfaction and financial security in their lives. Sure, certain sectors will want a specific degree, especially when it comes to science and engineering but if you want to work in a specific industry then if you work hard enough you can also achieve success in that field. In reality, most employers will want to see if you are educated and have a degree from UCLA is somewhat of a golden ticket for doors to open.

@dreamla very good points across the board. Just one slight correction, I do not believe UCLA offers graduate work for Communications Studies.

@uclahopeful2017

You should not worry about not getting the courses you want on orientation. As I mentioned earlier, I never had an issue of not getting my desired courses. If some courses are filled up by your orientation there are a couple things you can do. You can either go to class the first date and ask the professor to let you know and he or she will give you a PTE# so you can register. Students also tend to drop in and around the first couple of weeks and spaces will open up. You just need to keep your eye open on the Schedule of Classes as it updates in real-time. But in the meantime, find yourself back-up you want. UCLA has a ton of wonderful courses for all the majors that are offered.

does anyone know how to accept our financial aid award?

@SoCalx83 although many say its going to impossible I’m going to try my absolute best! @Tik1127 omg are you serious I thought they always had a school of journalism or comm for graduate school :-S I’m super bummed now. I swear they had one a couple of years ago :frowning: well at least usc does!
