FALL 2017 UCLA OFFICIAL TRANSFER THREAD

about the sample essay

Mood once UCLA decisions come out: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=89CDN4HOfJk

Any of you guys been watching UCLA move in videos on YouTube? I can’t wait to start shopping for stuff for my dorm! I can already see myself living there, filming, partying, studying at Starbucks, brunch at Urth, taking trips to laseraway. EVERYTHING IS JUST THERE AT YOUR FINGERTIPS. Geez it’s scary how much I want this.

@LynAmmo raises hand enthusiastically
Honestly, I can’t wait to be immersed in just the whole experience. It’s gonna be scary but it’s gonna be so amazing

@chocstraw So would you say it is worth the extra money to get an apartment in Westwood rather than saving money by getting a place a little further away and commuting? Also, do you know what the bus situation is like in LA? because I do not drive. Thanks for all the good info you’ve already posted btw, very insightful! I actually live in LA county but very rarely make it into the city.

TheNorthRemembers just reminded me of another thing I'm waiting for :(( >:D<

@Ahmeda13 yeah it wasn’t required, I submitted one because writing history essays is my strong suit and thought that doing so would mean I got in for sure- and it did.

Just brought it up because I’m hoping it’s possible to submit the writing sample as part of my appeal, should the worst happen. I wouldn’t mind going to UCSD, it’s a good school and I’m a local, but yeah I went into CC set on UCLA from day one.

@cmdchavezz Irvine is beautiful :slight_smile:

@chocstraw Omg I am the opposite of you. I really wanna get out of LA and go to SF lol. Waiting on UCB :frowning:

@northremembers Yeah, if you consider the opportunity cost of time spent commuting, then it’s probably worth it. Say you live 30 minutes away via commute.

This is an hour roundtrip, and say you’re a busy student, 5 days a week. That’s 5 hours a week, or 20 hours a month. Say you’re making $10 an hour after taxes then that’s about $200 dollars a month in commuting time that you could be working during instead. This is a simplified scenario, but if you cut down your transportation / commute to a negligible 10 minutes a day, you’re saving some time, and in a sense, money, every month. It sounds trite to say ‘time is money’, but it doesn’t hurt to think of it like that.

I’ve honestly never not had a car in LA, and I don’t know what it’s like. It seems very difficult. Bus situation doesn’t seem great. SF has a decent bus situation, so what I can say is that commuting via bus can be exhausting. I use it when my car is in the shop or when I drink, or if parking will be an issue. I’m usually very tired after I take it, it’s stimulating and draining. If a short bike ride or walk is your commute home, you might have more energy when you get back. All things to consider.

Another factor is how much you budget for entertainment. Westwood has good free / cheap entertainment, and you’ll have a lot of fun just hanging out in the area.

I’m probably a bit out of touch on these issues.

All of us are getting ahead of ourselves lol, still a few days away.

Reading that I wasn't the only student that went to CC with the intent of going to UCLA makes me worried that it doesn't actually 'set me apart' from other candidates. Seems like there are a lot of you.

@LynAmmo i totally feel you :frowning: ive been watching people’s vlogs of Bruin day & their first day of class too

The bus system is BAD
Read again: BAD

I didn’t have a car the first year and a half that I moved to LA and got sexually assaulted twice and robbed once. GET A CAR OR LIVE NEXT TO CAMPUS… or Uber, that’s also okay

:confused: does anyone know about the parking situation at UCLA? Is it usually hard to find parking if you buy a permit?

@myrideordie My friend goes to UCLA and she told me parking situation is a nightmare

the bus system is BAD, I was sugarcoating it. Expect to spent 3-4x the amount of time getting places. LA has the worst traffic in the world because you really do need a car to get the full experience. If you don’t want to drive or can’t afford to drive, you should live in westwood. You’ll be so worn out from the commuting that it will take a serious toll on your health and mood. What’s the point in saving $300 a month if you’re tired, missing out on the college experience, and spending all of the time you could be productive, commuting?

Honestly, a lot of people I talk to that don’t enjoy LA don’t drive. A cheap corolla insured for liability only will make this city much more enjoyable.

parking is bad btw. I grew up in LA, & I’ve spent several occasions looking for parking for 45-60 minutes.

@LynAmmo Yea but I think the decisions were released 5pm last year so I put a buffer hour in

I’m trying to write a paper about globalization impacts on specific indigenous cultures, and every five minutes my mind wonders. sooooo distracted by ucla decisions despite how serious this paper is. School, work, friends, and so on are no longer keeping me concentrated. Hats off to everyone trying to stay calm. If you’re calm, do you have any advice?
only 2 more days…
Also, how are the bike lanes for the radius around UCLA? Around my ccc it’s a nightmare of distracted drivers refusing to share the lane

@chocstraw do you need one if you’re living on campus? How much is it to keep your car on campus? One of my old friends goes to UCSD and when visiting her, just to keep her car at the school it was 300+. I was like [-X

does anyone know when UCLA sends out the decisions?
