My friend just got into UCSD and applied for housing there we she got “matched” with potential roommates and got to search through those profiles, does UCLA have something like that?
3 days left… you guys s****ing your pants yet?
3 days 2 hours 40 minutes guys! I’ve been s***ing my pants :))
haha omg how do you know the exact minute
@FaithGraceUC I actually thought admit rate into UCLA history was somewhere a little above 60%? (History major here too btw).
I’m hopeful for this Friday. I got into UCSD the day they released freshmen decisions and I think the 500 word history writing sample they ask you to submit had a lot to do with that.
I’m wondering, if worst case scenario happens come Friday (God forbid), whether I’d be able to appeal by submitting said writing sample.
I’m likely gonna end up with a C in one of my classes this semester and worse yet it’s the sole math course I’ve taken while in college that I’m using to fufill the IGETC requirement. UCSD won’t rescind over that according to my admission contract, but I’m worried for UCLA (on top of, you know, worrying if I’ll even get in hahaha).
…They asked for a 500 word history writing Sample?
Well… I guess I can cross UCSD off the list
@mightyMETA posted a countdown on here and I check it periodically then I downloaded the app
@FaithGraceUC It was completely optional so I wouldn’t count myself out at all if I were you.
Oh, okay, good— I already got into UCSB which I’d go to over SD anyway, but would be kind of annoyed if I paid to apply and no one bothered to mention that to me in an email or anything
@morocco123 Yeah I applied to UCB
I got into UCSD and there was no sample essay needed
@misskelseyk @lostar I’d hope so. I wrote the ‘what sets you apart’ essay about it. I specifically mentioned UCLA down to specific street names.
I graduated highschool in 5 years, super embarrassing, and had like… a 2.1? I had a semester of all F’s. I had a friend that moved to westwood in year 5 and I spent every weekend there, and decided to forgo every mediocre university that accepted me [with a 2.1]. Did extensive due diligence about CC and decided that I would go to CC specifically to try to get into UCLA. I didn’t have a major in mind, but just knew I wanted to go there. Felt like a major waste of time doing a fifth year, I tried to convince my parents that a GED and a good CC GPA would suffice, but they claimed they wouldn’t support me financially if I did that, I should have called their bluff.
Anyways, everything about UCLA felt right. Everyone I talked to was more accomplished or more intelligent than me, which was inspiring, not depressing. The atmosphere was amazing, people are generally very friendly and fun. Westwood heights has a great party scene, and it was amazing seeing people partying so hard, only to find out they’re 3.x engineering students during the week, or something similar.
I’m convinced I’m an LA lifer and UCLA represents every quality that I like about LA. People go hard, both in academic/professional lives, and personal lives. Everyone has a sense of vanity, but you can’t even call it that, because they’ve earned it.
I tried to head out to UCLA whenever possible during my time in CC, to keep the inspiration going. Ended up getting one B, a couple W’s, but otherwise an easy experience. Puts me right dead center for my major. I’m hoping I didn’t say too much in my essays, but I’d like to think this is a worthy story, and can’t help but believe that the universe rewards this sort of dedication and effort.
Anyone looking for housing, I know a little bit about the westwood housing market. You want to start looking in June / July, as everything is snatched up by August. You can expect about $1500 for a single bedroom, or 3k for 2. I've seen some very good deals, but they seem to be harder to come by. My friend's apartment was a 3br 2 ba with two living rooms and a back yard for like 3300. This was just a few years ago, but I'm still blown away at what a deal that was. If you can afford it, I'd recommend making the necessary lifestyle sacrifices to live in the hills. Any money you forgo will be worth it for the experience. Buy some ear plugs, as Thursday til Saturday has parties going on until 2am almost every weekend, which you can probably waltz into with a few friends, and meet some people. Parking is rough, parking tickets are $70+. There's a great sense of community, and you can have some unforgettable nights that seem to stretch on forever. This was confirmed by someone I know that actually transferred too.
getting nostalgic + anxious just typing this.
@chocstraw That was perfect =D> everything I’m feeling right now. If I don’t get in now I might just wait another year and reapply if my appeal is rejected.
@Chocstraw,In almost the same position with myself except with Berkeley. I love so much about it.
@LynAmmo Might do the same if I don’t get into Cal this year. It’s not worth the opportunity cost, but I really, really want to go to my top choice no matter what.
I actually fantasize about pulling over that UCLA sweatshirt, and screwing in a UCLA plate holder lol
SAME. I don’t have a car, but I know for sure that I’d be buying one of those first thing after getting any car in the future.
@chocstraw i just read your long post and i wanna cry. i haven’t been reading every single post on this thread so im not familiar with your stats. are you already going to ucla or are you waiting for decisions too? god i hang out there all the time too and it’s one of the reasons i want to go here so much. i just love westwood and living in la, i can’t imagine myself living anywhere else (in california).
I’m waiting for decisions.
3.9 economics major
1 B in accounting I
Prerecs done this semester, IGETC done this semester.
Had some weak starting semesters in terms of units and Ws, but took 16 units last semester with a 4.0 and taking 18 units this semester.
45 units done before this semester, there might be a 5 unit overlap, 63 done after this semester, plus 12 quarter units from APs.
total 106 quarter units.
sort of weak ECs. Slight volunteer work in HS, and just under the table / cash work.
started an instrument repair ‘business’. I make like 1k a month for a few hours work. Probably better to call it a hobby I made into a small operation.
Essays were potentially 50/50. I might have overshared on some, and they might have come off as whiny. Other half were clearly demonstrative of my passion for UCLA and my little repair operation. Used the entire supplemental writing section tying everything together, which might make me think that someone might be bothered by being asked to read all of it.
I can't describe westwood to anyone that hasn't been. I don't even care that much about the academics, but am secretly glad that saying you go there is enough to impress people. Everything felt right and I had some of the best nights of my life there. First thing I'm doing if I get in is walking down past the chevron, strolling into in n out, and slamming a 4x4 and a 'chocstraw' or chocolate strawberry shake.
I live in SF right now, just because I wanted to get out of LA for a minute. Been to SD, SB, SC been to Berkeley, been everywhere in this state. Nothing compares. This only solidified my belief that I'm an LA lifer. Great beaches, great weather, great hiking, great driving roads, great camping, great culture, hardworking people. I'm 95% sure that even if I don't get in, I'll move to westwood and go to SMC again.
As much as I’d like to go on an ego trip and say that UCLA will recognize our passion and reward it, or even go as far to say that UCLA would be missing out without us, they spend 10 minutes at most per application, more like 6-8 minutes. Some things are bound to not translate, or fall through the cracks. keep your eyes on the prize though
im pretty sure its only for freshman
