Pri

I’m not sure that Princeton falls into the “likely” category at this point; the university’s most recent communication states only that they are preparing for all possibilities, including “a possible continuation of virtual instruction.”

"After a historic spring semester, Ohio University is making plans to reopen campus for the fall 2020 semester.

“With the health and safety of our University community at the top of our minds, we are planning for our new normal,” President M. Duane Nellis said. “It is our hope and intention that we will return to in-person instruction in the fall if it is safe for us to do so.”

Under guidance from Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine and public health officials, members of the University community are discussing several scenarios to safely reopen on-campus operations. Further, OHIO is collaborating with our peer institutions across the state to help guide decision making as the impact of the pandemic continues to unfold in Athens, in Ohio, and beyond."

https://www.ohio.edu/news/2020/05/ohio-university-prepares-open-campuses-fall

@BuckeyeMWDSG I really hope they do open. The message in the link ends with a note that seems they are equally preparing for remote learning as many schools are doing as well.

"As information about the virus continues to evolve, OHIO will adjust as necessary. The University recognizes the need to be prepared to respond to changes in the trajectory of the virus and decisions made by the state to protect the health and safety of our campus communities.

Executive Vice President and Provost Elizabeth Sayrs said, “Should it be necessary or required to start the fall semester remotely, we will be prepared with a full array of courses using innovative modalities. Our outstanding faculty are already working with the Office of Instructional Innovation and University Libraries to draw on the University’s longstanding strength in distance education.”"

Tiger,

This is a direct quote from Princeton President Christopher Eisgruber’s May 4 “Message to the Princeton Community”:

"Regardless of what … happens, Princeton University is committed to offering the best possible undergraduate education consistent with the health and well-being of our community.

"We are accordingly asking faculty members to begin planning now under the assumption that their classes will be online in the fall.

“In the event that we are able to resume residential instruction, we will be able to pivot quickly back to the instructional techniques more familiar to all of us—though we should anticipate that even if we can return to on-campus instruction in the fall, University life will be subject to significant restrictions for as long as the pandemic continues. …”

As of yesterday, University of California schools plan to reopen according to the president:
https://www.mercurynews.com/2020/05/20/coronavirus-university-of-california-campuses-will-open-in-the-fall-napolitano-says/#comments

That’s behind the paywall. Here’s the actual statement from the UC Board of Regents from 20 May – it is extremely vague and by no means a strong commitment to re-opening.

https://regents.universityofcalifornia.edu/regmeet/may20/b2.pdf

The key concern is that they will follow the lead of the state and the local (county) authorities, who have so far not shown themselves to be very level-headed or at all in favor of opening. Here’s the relevant passage from the UC Board of Regents’ announcement:

“The University is committed to providing on-site activities …; the way we do this must be consistent with applicable State and Local Public Health Department orders and directives and the advice of experts, and will consider the impact on equity, diversity and inclusion.”

In effect, they’re passing the ball to Gov. Newsom and the county health officials. Not encouraging

I was aware of that statement, but my interpretation was that they’re preparing for all possibilities, including the worst-case scenario, but hoping for some degree of normality. Unfortunately we probably won’t know for sure until July. Eisgruber did say that the university is “optimistic” about resuming instruction for graduate students.

Understood - time will tell. My own interpretation is that the word “planning,” as used by university presidents or administrators, is the best indicator of their intentions.

re “hoping for some degree of normality”: same here. We’re all hoping for normality, but it seems to be returning faster to the flyover states such as FL, GA, etc than to the Northeast and the West Coast. Unfortunately for ivy-bound students, all of those universities are in states where panic mode still prevails.

Re Harvard, only Harvard Medical School has said for certain they will be online for first year students.

The latest information we are hearing is that Harvard college is considering spreading freshman among the graduate residence halls to increase distancing. In other words, they are seeing if they can make it work.
